With a tank that size, I'd discard some of the things that came with the kit. I suggest putting a 150w basking light (with 150w rated fixture) on an adjustable lamp stand over one side of the tank. You should be able to raise/lower the bulb so you can get the basking area to 100-110 and the cool side to 75-80. I also recommend not using the coil UVB light and instead using a tube style light which will produce a much wider, more even UVB output over the basking area. These are good choices for a tank that size.

This fixture http://www.amazon.com/Sunblaster-904296-NanoTech-Fixture-Reflector/dp/B00AKKUBDQ
With this bulb http://www.amazon.com/Zoo-Med-ReptiSun-10-0-Lamp/dp/B00AQU8HAO/

Or this combo set http://www.lightyourreptiles.com/22-t-5-ho-fixture-high-output-with-arcadia-d3-12-ho-bulb/

Those can be mounted right on top of the tank and should sit about 12'' above the basking spot.

Are you using an accurate thermometer? I suggest using a digital thermometer with a probe or an IR temp gun like this: http://www.amazon.com/Nubee-Temperature-Non-contact-Infrared-Thermometer/dp/B00CVHIJDK Having accurate temperature readings is quite important and the stick on dials they provide with those kits aren't very reliable.

Thanks for the advice, I really appreciate it! My 40 gallon doesn't have the compete wire cover. Its just where the 2 lights sit next to each other, so that light would not work. It so hard to find someone that can point out a specific enclosure that I should go with instead, along with lights and what not that I need.

Can you post some photos of your current setup? I may be able to help you tweak it if I have an idea of what you're starting with. As far as enclosures go, you could build a custom one if you're handy. There are walkthroughs for building a 4x2x2 "crossfire" enclosure. Otherwise you may be able to make adjustments to the one you have in place.

Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
Getting ready for another day. Feeling sleepy. 😴
I just walked into my room and instead of looking at me, Swordtail's eyes darted directly to the ice cream drumstick I'm holding
Finally replaced Swordtail's substrate
