I picked up a Fluker's critter cavern, the other day. I went home and baked it for 30 minutes at 450 degrees and all the sap poured out. Is it still safe to use or should coat it with a water based sealer, or scrape all the bark off then coat it?
I'm not sure if the sap will be harmful or not. I usually rinse mine well with water first and then bake it no higher than 260 for 45 minutes or so and it doesn't release the sap. If the sap is hardened you may be able to remove it. If you're in doubt you may want to just replace it and repurpose this one. I'm not sure what kind of wood is used for them so perhaps someone else knows or can comment on possible toxicity.
