Pooping outside of cage and not wanting to be handled

This is a weird one, but my bearded dragon constantly poops on my carpet. Every day I let my bearded dragon out of his cage to roam around, but every time he poops on my carpet. He is very timid of me even after bringing him home 2 months ago. I thought he would be used to me by now, but I can't tell if it is I who's doing something wrong, or if it is because my bearded dragon is just naturally timid. He's healthy, he gets twenty crickets a day, but he runs away from my hand even when I approach him at his head level, and if he gets away when I try to pick him up, he will hiss and gape. I know that you don't want to teach that running away equals freedom, but I just can't figure it out. If you need any additional information, please just ask, but I don't know what to do. Thanks.

It's not unusual for them to prefer pooping away from their enclosure. I would encourage that and try to train him to poop on something easy to clean like vinyl flooring. If you have a safe area for him to roam around in I'd give him some (well supervised) time outside of his tank to explore and burn off some energy. It sounds like he wants a bit of freedom from his tank. You can set up a portable basking spot for him to return to and warm up as well.

Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
Getting ready for another day. Feeling sleepy. 😴
I just walked into my room and instead of looking at me, Swordtail's eyes darted directly to the ice cream drumstick I'm holding
Finally replaced Swordtail's substrate
