I am so sorry, you did the best you could for the little guy which is all you can do and you gave him love and care and gave him be best chance you could, no one can ask more than that

it sounds as if you gave him a truly beautiful resting place as well, by all means morn your loss but don't forget to honor and celebrate the time you had with him, i'm sure he was grateful for meeting you and being in you and your mum's lives even for such a short time

It is better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all. You only ever truly fail, when you abandon trying. Anything worth doing is never easy. You get out what you put in.

a few sayings i'm fond of that spring to mind they may not help,
you did your best, he had a better and longer life than if not for you, that and remembering him with love was the best thing you could have ever done for him
