Why Do You Think...

I've had my ponder on. Why is it, with all the stipulation and concerns over sand substrate do many pet stores (here at least) use that as their substrate :dontknow:

Surely that just asks for people to buy sand and put them on the stuff. I know it's "debated" sand and not considered "wrong" but heck, after being given mines on sand I am telling you now I found no positives in it whatsoever, it wasn't easy to maintain, it drove me up the wall, it was expensive in all and just gargh!

Because pet store owners tend not to give a damn. Sand is cheap and convenient and it looks good - and they can then sell pricey bags of calcisand rather than admitting they're better off with newspaper, tile or repticarpet/astroturf. *shrugs* Commerce. :)

The #1 reason not to use sand is cleanliness. Unless you can remove it and replace it daily, there is no way to get it 100% clean every day. I'm talking about playsand and don't even consider any other sand as an option.

That is a good point DragonKeeper....actually feel kinda sheepish for not thinking of that.

Don't worry Rio - I'm very aware of the implications and arguments for sand and I've never been a fan. I was really just wondering why a pet store, which ought to be advocating the best for their own live stock, would encourage people to use sand by using it themselves.

Don't feel stupid. It's life. I have plenty of days where I look around ask "why...". I just tend to forget that a lot of people in this world aren't necessarily concerned with doing what is right. When I remind myself of that small fact, I can get through life for a week or two before I ask another dumb why. Just come back here and see that there are lots of us who are doing the right thing for our dragons and many of the people here even rescue some of those dragons you are looking at. It sure keeps my attitude better.

I just set Swordtail's timer for his bath and paused it so I could actually fill his soaking bowl up and he crawled over my phone and canceled the timer 🤣
Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
