Papa Smurf - pretty on the inside - full of sweetness

I'd like everyone to meet my new beardie, Papa Smurf. I met Papa Smurf at our local reptile shop last week. He was brought in by two pre-teen girls in a cookie tin, unable to walk, severely malnourished and destined for the freezer. They said they felt sorry for him and hoped he could be helped. He's has a severe case of MBD with jaw, limb and tail deformities. I was drawn to him and I wanted to take him so badly, but we already have our hands full and after the Holidays we were pretty broke.

But then PetCo had a $1/gallon sale and we got two 40-gallon breeders...and there was no excuse for not taking him. The shop owner said he would lend me an entire set-up if we took him saying he knew we would give him a good home, and even though we didn't take him up on the tank and lights loan, I just couldn't leave him there.

May I present the glorious Papa Smurf:

This was him the night I got him, December 28th. It took hours to set up the viv for him and the other new beardie we got that same day (yes we are insane LOL) so he got out of his pet carrier around 11:30pm. He looked so sad:

We gave him a midnight soak and he needed full support in the shallow tub water to keep him from drowning. I was worried I bit off more than I could handle with this sick boy, but after his bath he looked a little bit better. We noticed the blue sand in his eye and used a q-tip soaked in distilled water to gently remove it. Why do people house these poor guys on sand?!? His mouth had sand it in, it was caked on his vent, and his little arms and legs are stained blue. Now you see where he got the name Papa Smurf! He is little, grey-bearded and blue.

I hope this leg can straighten out. He has a really hard time walking because of it. I had some advice on here about vet wrap to protect his scales and I did buy some so we'll hopefully get him rehabilitated to be able to use this leg. I am kinda worried it may be broken or a prior break that healed wrong.

Here he is on December 30th, basking on his little low ladder in his jamming viv. He can't handle furniture right now because he is very crippled and can't really climb or get around, but he doesn't seem to mind. After mounting the UV inside the viv and raising the floor so he can be within about 6 inches, he really perked up. That UV is so important!

Here he is in his little bathtub with 1/2 Pedialyte and 1/2 water. Again he will drown if his head and neck aren't held above the water. He was drinking and drinking and all that thick saliva was running out into the water. After his bath he was swallowing and moving his neck as if we cleared out so much mucous. He looked much more comfortable.

And of course, after the bath we get a snuggle in the towel. He just lays wherever we put him and behaves so sweetly.

And here is how he slept. I was told here in my Beardie ER thread that he needed a night temp of at least 85 degrees since he is sick and it would help his immune system, and it really did make an improvement to the way he woke up the next day. He was much less stiff the next morning and ate breakfast right after waking up.

My husband, Otto, told me Papa Smurf may not survive and you just never know with a sick beardie. He is trying to make sure I have a realistic understanding of Papa Smurf's disease because he knows what a softie I am. I've cried over this little guy so much already. His poo is terrible and we know he has parasites. The medication to treat that is pretty harsh so he is worried the treatment may be too much for him. I've been giving him AcidolphiLiz daily hoping to boost that good gut flora in preparation for future veterinary intervention.

Papa Smurf is a sweet lover of a bearded dragon. He is tough and a fighter but gives the sweetest looks. He truly appreciates us and he knows we are trying to help him. He 100% allows us to do whatever we try to do with him and is a total doll. :love5:

Uh-oh I think I have fallen in love.....

Can't you just imagine how he feels from what we can only imagine his life was like?.....
"OMG I'm in heaven! This angel rescued me from hell, I have a nice warm, cozy house to live in with none of that crappy sand, I never have to feel that gnawing, starving, hungry hurt no more cause I get all kinds of good healthy food and other stuff every single day making me feel so much better, I get comfy low stuff to rest and crawl on and soft blankies too, I'm getting stronger and I can walk again, I can hold my head up in my bath, and I can even climbed Mt.Clothing... but best of all my Angel loves me and I get lots of cuddles ......Shannon, you don't have to worry about his quality of life...it's over the top! ....and he knows!

Awww man, you just made me cry. You're right. I just think about force-feeding him and how he is crippled, but you're right. He's definitely more comfortable here and he knows he is loved. I gotta stop looking at him like he has so little quality of life. He really doesn't know what he is missing in that respect, and I am sure he only knows his living conditions are better. Thanks. :)

I am in complete agreement with what Amanda wrote! You do so much for him that he's probably never had, not to mention the attention and love. Even having the proper lighting is amazing to him. His quality of life has improved beyond words to describe. Keep up the amazing work, you're doing a fantastic job

Thanks, Kaleen, for the encouragement! I have to remember that it's going to take time to get him healthy! I'm posting this update because this week has been amazing for Papa Smurf! I can't believe how much he has improved just in the last week. Granted I have more time to really observe and play with him on the weekends because I can play with him mid-morning when he has all the energy in the world instead of when he just wakes up or in the evening, so that helps. Today has been awesome. :blob5:

At about 7am I took him out before he had breakfast and he laid with me in bed and watched our anoles hunt and aggravate each other. They have all these little hunting-dominance stances and it's fascinating to watch them head-bob and eat and be jerks to each other.

I leave Papa Smurf to run around the bedroom for a short while on the weekends so he can get some better exercise. Today he was running and over the place and being very silly. He would run under the bed and run back out and even climb some of my bags that are on the floor. I've never seen him be this successful at climbing and standing up against things. I'm beyond happy. I want to post these pics so everyone can see the difference. I haven't even had him for a month yet.

This is a testament that even a dragon with a bad case of MBD can improve. I didn't think he would be so much better in just three weeks. I've mourned his situation and hoped that by summer we would see improvement. That just shows how little I knew about MBD, I guess. I hope this thread gives people hope and encourages people to rescue MBD dragons. I hesitated to take Papa Smurf because he looked so sick and so messed up, and I didn't know what to really do for him other than to try and give him a more comfortable life. This guy runs circles around the bedroom now. It's insane!

Here he is today, standing up against a Christmas gift bag. He ran out from under the bed and climbed this just like any of the other dragons we have. I couldn't believe it. No chance he was able to support himself on his hind legs 3 weeks ago.
6736343829_3f04324a8b.jpg

He can actually get up on all 4 legs now and elevate his chest when he walks instead of dragging himself along. Even from this side, which has his crippled leg, he is raising himself up.
6736339543_c4e15d0dbc.jpg

In this pic he is standing up against a canvas bag under the ironing board. He is clinging to the side and standing up. This takes a lot of upper body strength and control of his limbs. He couldn't really do this a week ago. About 10 days ago I had to 'help' him climb the back of the couch by having my hand behind his butt and pushing him up. Now he can pull himself up alone. I know he can't climb the back of the couch still, but he will be able to do it someday.

And look at that face - he's proud of himself and happy. :D

Last picture, I promise! Here is Sleepy Smurf under is Gator blankie in his viv. :D

Thanks, everyone, for all your advice and support over the last 3 weeks. Papa appreciates it.

Papa Smurf is a little cold in those pics, so he's a bit dark. So I wanted to post this pic I have on my cell phone that illustrates how much color he has actually gained:

Compare that to when we got him....

I'm glad to see he's improving. I can see he's happy. The only problem I've seen is the fact that they don't seem to live as long as they would have if they were treated well from the start.

That's OK. I don't need him to live 10 years. But I want to make sue that whatever he has left is happy and comfortable and he has the best life possible.

Thanks! I think this whole 'project' has taught me more about bearded dragon health and husbandry than I ever thought I would need to know. It's really not that hard to take care of him, but it's complicated. All the liquid supplements.... And God forbid I wake up late in the morning. You can't rush a lizard, no matter how hard you try.

I've been sad thinking about that. Not only do I not know how old he is, but he won't live as long, I know. I love him so much, too. I love his sweet little face.

Since I've brought up his sweet face, I have to share a funny household joke...

We have Papa Smurf and his funny jaw deformity:

And we have our 'Papa Smurf tongs' that also have a deformity:

:laughhard: I hope the pics post properly - I was having a problem with the website resizing them...looks like it isn't working but hopefully you get the idea.

I hope he keeps improving, too! He is such a tough guy. :D And I am one of those people who believe our beardies can love us. The look on his face when we got him compared to the way he looks at me now is so different. :love5:

just read this whole thread! dang it im crying now what a story!! :blob5:

Gotta give a huge hand to Pangaea Pets in Gainesville. The guy there took Papa Smurf in and fed and rehabbed him for 3 weeks and literally gave him to me for free if I would continue to rehab and take care of him. He lost money in feeders, a tank and his time out of the goodness of his heart. They're good people.

Shannon and Otto,
Only rescuers know rehabbing a sick and debilitated rescue dragon is difficult at best! Others only read about it thank goodness! When you start this journey you're on a hell-of-a learning curve because you already have the sick beardie and you're learning as you go! There is no beardie nursing school! You read, read, read and read some more and ask questions of the veteran beardie rescuers on BeardedDragon.ogr cause they've been there but there's no guarantee anything you do will help or make any difference for your sick little one! You have to become a specialist in their illness or disease, learning all you can about it to better understand it and be able to help them. You have to become a specialist in your beardie's nursing requirements specific to them and their illness. You create an environment suited to their physical and safety needs. You become a nutritional and supplement expert. You must order or shop for, measure, process and prepare everything yourself. There isn't a beardie convenient store down the street open 24/7 carrying a variety of beardie bug slurries with pedialyte, greens juice, acidophilus, and calcium added and pick your flavor. You assess their physical ability and incorporate physical therapy whenever you can so they can at least not decline further and maybe even improve. You have to hand feed to get food into them any way you can because if you don't, their lack of appetite in their debilitate state will starve them to death. You learn the knack of holding a struggling beardie in one hand and forearm while gently syringe feeding with the other. Eventually they learn to trust that the thing your trying to put in their mouth has food and they stop struggling to trying to run out of reach. You have to give them some cuddlin' after all that so they don't associate you with all the stress of eating.....you have to give them some lovin' because you love them. All of this is only a fraction that goes into taking care of a sick and debilitated beardie, it takes hours everyday. Yeah...it's difficult at best but what can ya do?.....they already burrowed into your heart and ya love 'em!
What an amazing gift you have given to that sweet little guy... a wonderful beardie life! He has improved beyond all expectations and that's because of you and your hours of dedication!.....He looks amazing!

I just set Swordtail's timer for his bath and paused it so I could actually fill his soaking bowl up and he crawled over my phone and canceled the timer 🤣
Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
