Cousin Confusion: Ginger & Scarlet

Hi all.... I'd like to tell you all a story...

This past weekend, I was dragon shopping, looking for a hypo leather het trans female. I found this beautiful girl from Breeder's Circle:

She was exactly what we were looking for. My wife and I spoke to the breeder and decided we would take the 5-hour drive down to Miami on Sunday, just to pick up this little girl, and come back the same night. On the way down, we decided on the name Ginger.

The breeder himself was busy, I believe he was at the Repticon show in Tampa, but he was going to have one of his employees meet us and give us the dragon. When we got her, she was a bit skittish, and very scared of us. My wife took her out of her container and tried to give her some cuddles and positive reinforcement on the way back home. It took a little bit, but she absolutely bonded with my wife. She seemed to trust her and gave her cuddles, and pretty much laid on her neck the entire time until it was time to go to sleep. When we got home, my wife laid with her a bit in our spare bedroom and passed out with Ginger on her neck. They slept like that all night long.

In the morning, I took her out and checked her out. But now that we were in the light and were able to compare pics, we realized we had come home with the wrong dragon. :( It turns out we had actually come home with this girl:

My wife was devastated. She could not imagine having to give back her girl who has slept with her all night. We had already named her and promised her we would take care of her. It was pretty much out of the question to give her back. We looked her up on the breeder's website, but unlike the one we had actually picked out, she was not 100% het for trans. For breeding purposes, she meant nothing to us and we paid a pretty high premium for a very specific dragon. Not to mention, 10+ hours in the car + gas and tolls. We are pretty much broke after buying this dragon plus her entire setup.

So, do we just have to realize that we now have a business and we have to treat these dragons like profit and get the one we originally asked for? Or do we let our hearts and love of dragons get in the way of business and keep the wrong dragon? We promised ourselves, that if we started a breeding business, that we would not treat dragons like profits and they would all be our special spoiled babies. Does that apply in this case? So many questions and decisions. To say that yesterday was a stressful day is an understatement.

I waited all day for a response from the breeder. I heard from him late in the afternoon. It was an honest mistake that was made. These girls are very similar except for the non-visible het. Well, we talked it out, and the guy is a very responsible business owner and gave us a couple of options to choose from. One option was a great deal to keep both of them, which is what we wished we could do, but just didn't have the money. Luckily, he was willing to ship the right girl before we are able to pay him, which is really nice of him.

So.... we're going to get to keep both girls. Of course, now we had named the wrong girl Ginger, and we can't take that back anymore, so the new girl, the original one we had picked out... so the new girl is now Scarlet. They are cousins, as their mothers were both sisters, but they have different fathers. We've got quite the mixup here, but we'll get it right. Until Friday, both girls will have to share an enclosure, but we are splitting them as soon as I get paid. We have taken a HUGE financial hit here as both of these dragons were originally priced at $350 each. We may spend a day without eating, but we have two beautiful girls that we are already in love with. Scarlet should be getting shipped today and we should have her tomorrow. Ginger is already in our possession as is eating great. She really loves and trusts my wife, but she is terrified of me. But I am working on her. She has already been introduced to Chief and they were already giving eachother the OK for breeding, so when the time comes, Ginger will be another girlfriend for Chief. Scarlet is meant for a future male.

So that is the story of how I now have 4 dragons in my house.

Well, Spring Fever has taken its toll on my girls' relationship. Yesterday Papa Smurf was being a J-erk in his viv and Ginger was on the bed in her high place on some blankets, and Scarlet was down below her on the bed. Well, Ginger started bearding and stomping and head-bobbing, and ran down to the bed to be eye-level with Smurf and it just so happened that Scarlet was down there just chillin. Ginger running down towards Scarlet really made her mad. Next thing I knew, Scarlet bearded and postured at Ginger. :( I don't know if they would have nipped each other or what - but both girls were on HIGH ALERT. Of couse Mommy was right there to settle them down, but there ya go - you can't leave bearded dragons unattended together. No matter how good they are, they are animals and they can't control themselves. :angry5:

Well, it's a good thing you were right there so nothing bad happened. I bet Papa was proud of himself for getting the girls all worked up. I wish I could have seen that!

I took Papa out and showed him to Ginger and asked her if she really wanted to breed with this angry cripple? LOL! I know that is mean, but come on. The pretty girls always want to be with the bad boys. HAHAHAHA. The whole time Papa was swimming in mid-air, trying to get to her and she was like :silent: :silent: :silent:

She got very quiet after that. lol

For all that Papa is beat up, that DOES say a lot for his genetics. I'm just saying. And he is pretty handsome for all his infirmities. So... It's not like he wouldn't produce half of a set of good genetic off spring. :D

Instinct is a very interesting thing, it has always been a wonder to me how my cats who have been BFF for years will attack eachother out of pure territorial instinct. They just can't fight it

I think a dragons instincts are more deeply ingrained, yay for being a responsible beardie parent and saving the day!

So far, no more chick fights LOL!!!! Tonight Scarlet had her bath, and she was very uncooperative for my little Scarly. She's usually so laid back, but she is shedding, and the sheddy skin is very thick. It seems much thicker and tougher than her last shed. She's pretty annoyed and didn't even eat supper.

She looks like a piebald beardie in this pic:

Ginger gets her bath tomorow. Tonight she was letting her belly hang out, and being very lazy.

Wow, Scarlet. That is some wicked opaque shed. Poor girly. :-( You must be itchy and sore and so ready to rub your face against sand paper! :(

Aww poor Scarlet, hopefully that shed comes off soon. Ginger is so cute, her belly is adorable. She's like a baseball with legs!

Her shed is the thickest I have ever seen! It's really weird - like she was dipped in paraffin.

Ginger had just eaten 12 silkworms, so yeah she looks like she is about to POP!

This is Scarlet's first shed where she is just not happy. I mean, they always get itchy and that sort of thing, but this is a rebellious and irritated Scarl! :(

Looking at her head from above she really does look pied. It's so weird.

All kinds of attitudes are happening in our home right now. Scarlet hasn't been eating the last few weeks, or at least not much. I know it's because of psychological dominating, because Ginger's viv is higher than Scarlet's and Ginger very dominant and gives everyone mean looks all day. Ginger really is meaner than everyone else, or just really confident. I don't know how to describe it - she is whatever gets into everyone's head. :?

Yesterday I brought Ginger out at about 9am to hang in the living room. I put her on the back of the couch and she stayed there all day long. I put her away after 4pm. She literally did not move, and was very pleased with her high and controlling position back there.

Scarlet was on a pillow on the floor, looking back at Chief. :D

I rearranged the bedroom a little bit hoping the beardies are better arranged and they will feel less stressed. We'll see! :D

How much did they measure in at last time? Pretty girls. I think Odahviing is just like Ginger. She is SO flipping BIG in personality. She BIT the tip of one of the CAT'S TAIL!! Neko's tail was twitching and Odahviing went for it!

They were just over 16" about a month ago! Growing girls! I think our feisty girls are what the word 'dragon' embodies. I see Ginger and I see a DRAGON. Some of them are just sweet lizards, but Ginger would breathe fire if she could. Lol!

I just set Swordtail's timer for his bath and paused it so I could actually fill his soaking bowl up and he crawled over my phone and canceled the timer 🤣
Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
