baby markings

Whenever i see pictures of babies they all have weird markings i.e. where the owner has draw numbers on them or so on.

What do they use and why do they do it?

Some use nail polish or puffy paint.

Its so they can keep track of which baby is which especially when there are multiple clutches involved and when they are being sold it helps the buyer and seller know exactly which one they are getting.

does nail varnish not harm them?? with the strong vapours and stuff and does it come off every shed?

I have never personally done it but many others have so i'm assuming it dries quickly enough that it doesn't hurt them. Yes, it would come off with every shed.
