She does not have retained shed, she shed her tail four days ago and it came off clean, there was no old shed.
That is not the cause. Nor is dehydration.
Getting bit and infected before we got her is a possibility but that was three weeks ago.
-Update- When I run my hand over the bump above the black part, clear liquid comes out. I am not disputing infection as it seems likely, just simply stating there is no possible way its from shed cutting off circulation as there was no old shed.
Any other ideas on what caused this?

Sometimes it just happens, the reason doesn't really matter at this point. What does matter is her tail is infected, if you don't get her to a vet and get it treated, you could loose her.

So indisputably tail rot?
(I know it wont stop it from spreading, but if I can't figure out what is causing it how do I know it will not come back?)
Gonna be calling some vets when Travis gets home (I don't have a phone).
I was looking online though and we do not have a reptile specific vet or specialist, so how would I go about asking at a normal vet to make sure they have actually handled reptiles, and tail rot before?

Could it be tail rot?

Scroll down the page, until you get to the tail rot bit.

I have no idea what you mean by "a fat store coming in". Sorry. :(

Hope this helps a little. x

You could either
1) post a new topic asking for herp vets in your area on this forum. Youll be suprised how many people on here are actually in your area. I did this and got 3 good ones within an hour of me.
2) call them and just ask. They will tell you if they have a "reptile specialist" and you can even ask them to talk to the vet. Most of the time they will leave them a msg and the vet will call you back, or the receptionist will be the middleman and you can talk to the vet that way. Ask them to ask the reptile vet if theyve dealt with tailrot before.

Thank you all =) Gonna call the vet. If it end up being more than we can afford (off season for construction) then I know of a rescue the next town up that would be able to help her if I surrendered her, so either way she will get help.

Travis called around to some vets, the price quota is minimally a month or rent and utilities, so there's no was we can do that right now.
Still calling around to see if there is some kind of low income thing out there, but if not we're going to surrender her to a shelter. Going to start a new thread asking for good ones in my area, so if you know any please reply over there.
Thank you all for your quick responses and help.

Hello,

This should be relatively easy to get taken care of.
I don't know for sure if it is tail rot, but probably a localized infection. If she did not have retained shed, perhaps she nicked it on something in her tank possibly? Do you leave crickets in her tank?
Are you putting antibiotic ointment on it daily to help with infection?

I just set Swordtail's timer for his bath and paused it so I could actually fill his soaking bowl up and he crawled over my phone and canceled the timer 🤣
Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
