Goiters... not a myth :/

So I just wanted to report to everyone some recent knowledge I've gained... Let me start with the background

After spring break (roughly beginning of March), Inigo's food intake rapidly decreased... over a course of a couple weeks he went from eating 7-9 large dubias a day to maybe 1 every other day, if that. I located a vet that had great experience with reptiles, and made an appointment to get an overall physical done for him to see what the problem was. At the visit, the vet immediately pointed out the main problem for why he had stopped eating. She opened his mouth and showed me a massive goiter that was blocking his esophagus... she said if it had gotten much bigger it could have choked off his airway O.O We talked about his diet and environment and everything else to see what had caused this to happen. For his diet: aside from the dubias, his vegetable intake consisted of turnip greens, mustard greens, and collard greens dusted with a multi-vit plus the occasional salad topper like grapes and apples and what not. She said the 3 main things I just listed (turnip, mustard, and collard) were high in those goiter causes agents that probably caused this goiter to form. At the moment she's having me pump him with romaine lettuce every day and broccoli every so often, as these vegetables are supposed to help counter and potentially even fix this goiter problem. Well I've been praying that this will work because if not... I truly can't afford any more vet bills, since I am also treating him for parasites and the current medication we're giving him doesnt seem to be getting rid of all of them, not to mention college expenses are eating away at my wallet too atm. I'm getting fecals done for him once a week at this point to check his parasite levels and on May 7 I go back with Inigo to see if the goiter has gotten any better. If he hasn't gotten better I need to make a decision about what to do with him... it breaks my heart to even think about this but I may have to give him to a home that can afford his needs; or worse.. (trying not to think about it atm). Anyways.. to vent a little I feel like a bad pet owner because I may not be able to give him the medical care he needs... but we'll see in a week & a half what the situation really looks like..

But back to my original point.. please do take warning when the vegetables are labeled as potential goiter risks if fed too often. But like I said the vet told me this can be countered if balanced with romaine lettuce and broccoli. Thanks for listening, everyone, and I hope hope hope my next post on here isn't in the "Free" classifieds.

Oh, I am SO sorry to hear that. I'm sure everything will work out, but I'll still keep my fingers crossed for good measure.

You said you took him an experienced herp vets? To let you know broccoli also contains a lot of goitrogen even in higher concentration than colloard, mustard, and turnip greens. Usually, those three greens are the main staple of herbivorous reptiles in captivity because they contain a lot less goitrogen than some of the veggies and greens and shouldn't cause any problem. I think there may be something else that is causing this that your vet doesn't know about. Maybe try to find a second opinion, if that is an option.

I wish there was another option.. at this point I've just been feeding him romaine luckily since i haven't gotten my hands on any broccoli yet, thank goodness. The vet I'm with really is the best I'll be able to get for him around this area. The other two vets in this town dont really have any experience with reptiles, at least not nearly as much as my current vet. His next fecal is this Thursday... goodness goodness I do hope this isn't going to cost too much more :/ Thanks for all your support guys!

If I were you I would attempt to call around outside of your area to find other opinions. It wont be easy as many wont give any opinion without seeing the animal. Im a vet tech and I know aome awesome vets personally, so Ill ask around...maybe I can get some more info for you. It concerns me that they told you to feed romaine and broccoli...not the best but I do understand the direction he was going. See what else you can find...ill do the same.

I just wanted to say thank you all for your suggestions. I'm not really sure how to put this but I'm almost to the point where I feel like he needs to find a better home. I'm really almost out of funds I can spare for Inigo, the timing of all these medical problems is really hitting me hard and I know I sound like a bad owner right now but I have so much else I need money for right now and it turns out the job I thought I'd have this summer was given to someone else.. so I'm not even sure if I'm going to have the job I need this summer. I'm not sure if this is the stress from finals and bills talking right now but I kinda was wondering if I put him out there would anyone be willing to take him in? He is the most loving boy in the world and I wouldn't give him up for anything if I could help it.. but stuff happens sometimes and etc etc... I don't know. I'm just trying to figure out what my options are right now. I'm so sorry to everyone that thinks I'm being a bad owner, I really am trying to take care of him as best I can til I can figure out what to do.

I guess I need to reply on here.. his goiter has gotten a lot better compared to what it was. It's shrunken to the point where's he's eating okay again now. But basically I don't think diet is going to be enough to make it completely go away. good news is he's completely parasite free now tho ^_^ I guess that's a silver lining of some sort haha.

Jaja, pm Drache (tracy) she is highly knowledgeable about dragon health issues and might be able to offer some advice. If you really want to give your dragon up for adoption, post that in the want ads here, free dragon. This way you can send your baby off to someone who will have experience, and might even be close enough for you to visit !
Just hoping this helps out !
Janie.

Thanks Janie, at this point I'm just taking care of him until I can find him a new home. And I have posted in the "for free' section... 141 views but no offers yet :/ I hope the fact that he has a goiter isn't scaring everyone off, he's an awesome dragon and I'm sure he'll overcome this with the right care. He's eating fine for now and I've stopped feeding him the stuff that caused this, so he'll be okay until I can find him a new home. Thank you! :)

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
