So I just wanted to report to everyone some recent knowledge I've gained... Let me start with the background
After spring break (roughly beginning of March), Inigo's food intake rapidly decreased... over a course of a couple weeks he went from eating 7-9 large dubias a day to maybe 1 every other day, if that. I located a vet that had great experience with reptiles, and made an appointment to get an overall physical done for him to see what the problem was. At the visit, the vet immediately pointed out the main problem for why he had stopped eating. She opened his mouth and showed me a massive goiter that was blocking his esophagus... she said if it had gotten much bigger it could have choked off his airway O.O We talked about his diet and environment and everything else to see what had caused this to happen. For his diet: aside from the dubias, his vegetable intake consisted of turnip greens, mustard greens, and collard greens dusted with a multi-vit plus the occasional salad topper like grapes and apples and what not. She said the 3 main things I just listed (turnip, mustard, and collard) were high in those goiter causes agents that probably caused this goiter to form. At the moment she's having me pump him with romaine lettuce every day and broccoli every so often, as these vegetables are supposed to help counter and potentially even fix this goiter problem. Well I've been praying that this will work because if not... I truly can't afford any more vet bills, since I am also treating him for parasites and the current medication we're giving him doesnt seem to be getting rid of all of them, not to mention college expenses are eating away at my wallet too atm. I'm getting fecals done for him once a week at this point to check his parasite levels and on May 7 I go back with Inigo to see if the goiter has gotten any better. If he hasn't gotten better I need to make a decision about what to do with him... it breaks my heart to even think about this but I may have to give him to a home that can afford his needs; or worse.. (trying not to think about it atm). Anyways.. to vent a little I feel like a bad pet owner because I may not be able to give him the medical care he needs... but we'll see in a week & a half what the situation really looks like..
But back to my original point.. please do take warning when the vegetables are labeled as potential goiter risks if fed too often. But like I said the vet told me this can be countered if balanced with romaine lettuce and broccoli. Thanks for listening, everyone, and I hope hope hope my next post on here isn't in the "Free" classifieds.
