My beardie is about 3 months old. He is doing great and I am very happy. He is growing and from my veiw he seems very healthy and active. However, my concern is that he hardly eats greens or any veggies. He loves his crickets and devowers them but when I put in his salad he wants nothing to do with it. I have tried to feed him the salad before the crickets and he would rather starve. i have tryed to feed him out of my hand and he will lick it but not eat it. I have seen him take a couple of bits so I know he has eated before. Should I be concerned or will he eventually like the greens?
this is what I have tried so far:
Carrots
Mustared Greens
Collared Greens
Celery Leaves and Stalk
Strwberries
Apples
Apple juice on top of salad
Please let me know if I should be concered or just a worry wort!
Young Beardies can be very picky when it comes to greens and some may not show any interest until older. Mine would have nothing to do with anything green for the first 6 months. The most we could get him to do is take of few bites if we hand fed him. But, as per the helpful folks on this website, I continued to offer him a salad daily. It was also suggested to keep trying different veggies, until we possibly found something he liked. Low and behold, he loved yellow stuff! He would walk through fire to get to yellow bell peppers! lol Had to be the color as we would not touch green or red bell peppers. So I decided to try other yellow veggies. Sure enough, he liked yellow squash, yellow corn, etc. I figured yellow veggies only were better than no veggies at all. Although I continued to offer green stuff. People kept telling me that as he got older he would take to the veggies more. He is almost year old now and still not a big salad eater, he does seem to be warming up to the green stuff now. He eats a little each day. I think I have him trained now, that he will not get his worms and crickets until he eats a little of his salad.
Stay vigilant by continuing to offer veggies daily. Try different vegetables. Try feeding veggies in the mornings when they are hungriest, before you offer live feeders. I also put some non-sweetened 100% juice (apple) in a spray bottle and mist his veggies with it. He really seems to like that!
Thank you so much I feel much better. I will keep being diligent about the veggies and I will definitly feed him more in the mornign before he gets his crickets. But I am not worried which is a relife.
Thanks Again
I have 5 beardies, 2 - 5 1/2 month olds, 1-- 3 1/2 month old and 2 -- babies Just 2 months old. my 3 older beardies love thier greens, i give them a good size dish of greens in the morning (greens with variety of other veggies)no crix until first feeding at about 1 p.m. or so . they really didn't start eating them untill they were about 3 months or so. now my babies , i'm working on . i offer them greens on a daily basis whether they eat them or not. every now and again i catch them eating them. i fill thier dish and when i check it later in the day , i can tell that they've been eating them. they do but not like my older ones. give your beardie a little time , i'm sure he/she will come around.
