Hi, I am currently constructing a 48InchesX27inchesX24inches (LXWXH) for my baby bearded dragon, he's grown a lot since I got him and thought now is the time to build a new enclosure that will be used for the rest of his life. I heard that a really big viv for a small beardie can be dangerous because they get scared and can die from not enough heat because they are away from the heat to much. Is this true?
Size sounds fine. I dont think the beardie will get scared, but you may want to feed him in a separate smaller space (10 or 20 gallon tank or a rubbermaid container), b/c it may be too hard for him to catch food in such a large space.
As far as being cold, just make sure that your lights are set up so that you have a basking spot, and on the cool end around 78-80 Fahrenheit. You may have to have a smaller bulb on the end opposite of the basking area to keep the heat up.
