Why is my bearded dragon scared of me when he is inside the enclosure but not outside?

Hi I have a bearded dragon named gizmo who is about 6-7 months old.He allows me to whole him and feeds from my hand. But he never comes to my hand willingly, but otherwise is fine. But one thing i have been noticing is when he is under a light or just generally in his enclosure he will always scoot away from me when i try to touch him which he would not do if he was outside of the enclosure playing with me.I was just wondering if anyone new why this is.

It's pretty normal behavior. Try to not reach in from above though, that can spook them.

What you’re noticing with Gizmo is pretty normal for bearded dragons. In their enclosure, they often see it as their safe space, so they can act more cautious or territorial, which might explain why he scoots away when you reach in. Outside the enclosure, he’s likely more relaxed since it’s neutral territory. To help him feel more comfortable, try approaching him from the side rather than above (to avoid triggering his prey instincts), move slowly, and offer treats when you interact. Over time, this can build more trust and ease his wariness.

Hey! I'm planning on ordering a 4x2x2 for my next beardie but I'm worried about lighting. I have a UVA and a UVB but they are small (the UVA just being a bulb and the UVB being 12 ish inches?) My house is drafty so I need a strong light that puts off quite a good amount of heat, any suggestions?
