Hello, I had some questions about measurement. I have this temp gun. http://www.amazon.com/Etekcity-Lasergrip-774-Non-contact-Thermometer/dp/B00837ZGRY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1449446436&sr=8-2&keywords=etekcity+temperature+gun I am measuring the temp of my babys log. I am getting readings between 125 and 105. Is this just the surface or the air temp. Should I measure the surface or air temp? Do I need a probe and which one?I am worried it may be too hot, also he never really goes to his coolside.
The temp guns are very good. Where exactly are you taking the measurements, on the log which is directly below his basking light or on the bottom of the tank? Ideally, the basking spot/temperatures should be in a range of 95-110 really. Too much higher than that can be dangerous for possible overheating.
What are the temperatures of the cooler end?
You need to measure the basking temperature/spot where he sits at most. You can also measure the air temperature, too just so you have an idea of the ambient temperatures in his tank overall.
What wattage of basking light do you have?
