What you can do is set the thermometer up when he is out of the tank, maybe during bath time perhaps. Then you won't have to worry about him plopping down on top of it either, I know how that can happen. :mrgreen:

Not sure what you mean about a type A bulb that gives off UVB. :? Do you mean that you don't want to get the Repti-Sun 10.0 strip fluorescent? But instead, you're hoping to be able to use a bulb that would fit in a clamp lamp like you use to hold the basking bulb?

Actually, you can put the basking holder in the front and an 18" fluorescent holder with the UVB right behind it, the long way. I had a basking & strip UVB on a 20 gallon tank & it worked fine. Once you get the strip fluorescent, you might have to make the basking area a little higher though, so your beardie can get 6 to 8" from it. Once you get the distance right, then you check the temps with a temp gun or digital with a probe & adjust the wattage of the basking bulb accordingly.

Wow, that's a small tank, what you can do is put the fluorescent strip kiddy corner though, do you know what I mean? At an angle on the basking area, then put the basking bulb holder right in front of it on the same side, so that he can get both benefits at once. How long is your beardie?

I recommend doing what you can to get the correct uvb. You can get a fixture from Walmart or Home Depot. I got a fixture that is used in a fish tank and replaced the regular fluorescent with the reptisun 10 18". The reason I strongly recommend getting a reptisun 10 fluorescent tube ASAP is because of the girl we got a month ago. Speedy was 28 grams when we got her and 9 inches long. She was very skinny.
They had her for several months and she never really grew under their care. They told me that they didn't get a uvb for her because they couldn't afford it.
Here she is the morning after we got her:

Here she is on the 23rd of September. We had her under the reptisun 10 tube since August 30th.

I have learned that a lack of uvb they have makes their appetite decrease. With Redrock, when her reptisun 10 was nearing the 6 month age, her appetite would decrease until I got her a new one.
