I made a comment the other day in a pm about what I do for a living and the things I do for recreation and the crowd I generally run with.
It occurred to me that I've posted lots of photos of what I do for recreation but none of what I do at work. I thought I would post a few of that just for giggles.
This is one of the more simple units I do. But in it's day it was one of the most widely distributed units on the road.
It's the notorious 4L-slippy better know as the 4L60e.
For the record I DID NOT paint it pink, some other knuckle-head did that 😆
This is the disassembled and cleaned unit, the overhaul stuff hasn't arrived yet or I would have included that in the pictures as well.
The first coulpe pictures are the failed and/or upgraded parts.

My hand in the picture is for reference. Most of the stuff on the table all goes in the little bitty hole. Transmissions truly are a wonder of engineering.
Honestly if I fully disassembled it all at once there would be about half again as much on the table, but I do it in stages to save room to actually work lol.

If I ever wind up with my dream car of a vintage VW bug, I know who to call! My first car was a '72 super beetle that I rebuit the engine in. Miss that damn car!

I have an uncle that collects beetles. If it turns out I'm his favorite nephew (I have to be I'm his only nephew lol) and I inherite them, I'll hook you up 🙂 ( I'm not a big fan of them, the stuff they used to stuff the seats and headliner gives me migraines) now the Beetle dune buggies are cool 😎 (no migraines)

I WILL TAKE IT!!! my favorite thing about them was if i could not fix mine on the side of the road, i at least knew what the hell was wrong with it! I never had migraine issues, but we're talking about 30 years ago, so knowing my migraines that has quite possibly changed.

Man, this is so cool! Thanks for sharing the photo.
I noticed the order on your desktop, it is obvious from all this that you love what you do and that is great!
I would also share a photo from my workplace, but all this will not be interesting. It will be a photo of a laptop with a text screen on which there are "Egyptian letters" (program code).
By the way, I love watching Discovery programs about restoring old cars, so your photos are like a window into a wanderland for me. :D

A photo from my workplace might first look a bit weird and eerie. But what I really do, it will also look like this

Attached is just a photo from my workplace, how it looks outside. In one of those buildings out in the Atacama desert, it's me coding stuff all day long :D

I think coding is a kick azz job, you guys read and write a language that is alien to me, that's pretty awesome.

It suits me very well (I'm into all kind of technical and mathematical stuff, and I'm an introvert).
Code I'm writing is for astronomical research, could be e.g. analysis of data taken by telescopes, code that steers the optics of a telescope, some mechatronic things...

In fact, all programming languages are easy to learn. Difficulties arise when a complex task appears that needs to be implemented using some language.
My work is related to the creation of high-speed data processing systems. The difficulty lies in how to serve 10 or 20 million users on one server at speeds of 100-200 thousand transactions per second.
This all relates to the processing of SMS traffic from mobile abonents of cellular networks, calculating the Internet traffic generated by user equipments, etc.

I totally agree! For learning how to code, there are nowadays tons (!) of usually good to very good instructions online. For anybody somewhat interested into that, I can strongly recommend taking a look :)

Difficulties indeed usually arise when data become more complex, more unstructured (like: you have measurements from this, from this, from this... instrument, and they all behave a bit differently, like one counts the "optical spectrum" as including a bit more or bit less from the UV, or some data come in regularly sampled (e.g.: one measurement each hour during the night) and some are much more sparse and with changing data quality (e.g.: five a night, nothing for months, then some in the twilight).
Also, data volume. I'm now working on a project that will produce several TB of data per night obtained from a big telescope, quickly summing up to PB (Petabytes), and a nightly at least first evaluation (so the software can decide on how to forward which information to which other data centers, and which information to which other observatories and monitoring stations) should run. Here I'm dealing with computing bandwidth (how fast the available computers can carry out the computations, and whether I can speed it up so it runs faster without the need to purchase additional hardware), storage volume, and the network transmission speed which can become a bottleneck especially for remote stations.

I consider that a bad azz job. I wish I had gone into something like that. Especially anything to do with space or space exploration. Even in a support role, heck I'd climb up there and clean lens if they promised to let me peek through it after 😉😁

Yeah to complicated for me lol, I'll leave that to you guys. I do admire your guys ability to do that kind of work. For me it's like watching a magician work except it isn't trickery.
I tried learning to use hexidecimal for a nefarious video game agenda once 😈😈☠☠ I was able to accomplish the items I wanted in game with a lot of trail and error (WAY more error lol) but I wasn't ever truly competent at it.

I think that any person who loves his job will be like a magician.
Believe me, for many of us your job is something inaccessible.
I have always admired people who can disassemble and, most importantly, assemble a transmission.

Hey! I'm planning on ordering a 4x2x2 for my next beardie but I'm worried about lighting. I have a UVA and a UVB but they are small (the UVA just being a bulb and the UVB being 12 ish inches?) My house is drafty so I need a strong light that puts off quite a good amount of heat, any suggestions?
