There is some debate as to the use of sand or not. I've only read about the possibility of impaction, but there is another danger.

I came home to find that my dragon had burrowed under a log and it had pinned him... to death

Really sorry to hear that.
But thats why everything is meant to be placed on the actual Viv floor, not on the sand. I know that and i dont even have my beardies yet.

i'm guessing you aren't a therapist

I wonder if it was the sand itself that caused the fall or the way the object was balanced

No Unfortunately im not a therapist. I just say things how i see them. Sometimes a bit bluntly, so apologises.
I just dont like animals dying when it could have maybe been avoided. Im not in any way sayin this was Arcais' fault. Just the fact people know beardied like digging, so should make sure things cannot be burrowed under.

Hard way to learn, but the wood was ON TOP of the sand. It was only about an inch and a half, but he had been burrowing little tunnels under. My guess is that it created a pivot point that slid just enough to pin a baby.

Mental note, push it ALL the way down to the floor. :banghead:

So sorry about your loss! It's so terrible when these things happen.

Don't beat yourself up about it. Everything about beardies is a learning experiance; you've learned, and you've helped others by warning them.

I'm sorry about what happened. I agree, don't beat yourself up. Redrock died last September after she fell off my shoulder and injured her head. My husband had told me to put her on the ground but she clung so hard to my shirt that I left her there. I was doing the same thing you are, "Why didn't I?" It won't change anything and you have learned, as we did. We don't take our girls outside without a leash in case something like this happens again.

Thanks all.

Hopefully others have read this and realized they had the same situation, and then fixed it.

New beardie on the way soon. My son has been asking constantly

Hey! I'm planning on ordering a 4x2x2 for my next beardie but I'm worried about lighting. I have a UVA and a UVB but they are small (the UVA just being a bulb and the UVB being 12 ish inches?) My house is drafty so I need a strong light that puts off quite a good amount of heat, any suggestions?
