Hi!!! Just had emergency here where we just replaced UVB light (finally got an Arcadia light!), and the new hold/brace failed. It fell, narrowly missing most of our girl- just the edge of the hood/reflector landed on one of her toes. However, the way it landed on her toe pretty much twisted the toe nail flat + partially out and I'm concerned what to do in the meantime to help her. Whether or not I should leave it, brace it somehow so she doesn't completely detach it, or what. Photos are of the injury.
On tramadol as a daily med, so she's at least already had a pain reliever in her system. It's evening here so I just need advice until we can call/get in to the vet tomorrow morning
Your beardie is very lucky it didn’t cause severe damage. Clean the wound with copious amounts of warm water (if you have antibacterial soap make the water soapy with it). You can apply a light layer of honey or petroleum jelly. Make sure you leave the wound uncovered as if you try to wrap it you can cause more trauma. Keep the wound moist (petroleum jelly will do the job). Make sure that the wound doesn't get infected and that she doesn't walk on it. Here is a website that may help: How to Care For Cuts and Abrasions in Reptiles - Fauna Care. Try to get her to an exotic vet as soon as possible. Hope she gets better

Thank you!! Yes, we were super lucky that's the only injury that occurred - my partner managed to grab one side as it came down, stopping it from falling bang across her middle/back/head. Would have been horrific otherwise. Will be getting her to our herp specialist vet first thing tomorrow morning; they're amazing and great at fitting you in within the hour/day if there's an emergency. Just had an appointment with him today RE; ongoing management of her kidney problems, so at least she'll still be fresh in his brain. Trying to stay calm and not be too freaked for hubby as he was a complete wreck over what happened + feeling extremely guilty over the accident.
We don't have honey or petroleum jelly (nor anything similar), but we do have Betadine and some bactroban ointment. The bactroban is an antibiotic and will keep the wound site moist- could that be a suitable alternative?

What luck that your partner caught it
Yes, betadine and bactroban a suitable alternatives. She is a tough cookie! Wishing all the best for the vet appointment
Organic honey un filtered honey example manuka is a great bacteria killer and will stop infection- no crickets in the tank tho they will go straight for the honey
I am glad the injuries were not worse, luckily you were
able to keep it from landing on her head!
How is her little toe today? As Karrie suggested, the
Organic raw honey is excellent for help with warding
off infections.
Let us know how she is doing.

Her toe is doing well!! Nothing was broken (somehow lol) it was just the nail that was partially torn. The nail is still attached just enough that the vet is hedging on whether on not to clip it- wants to wait and see as there is a chance the nail bed can heal + continue to grow. No sign of infection and has scabbed up pretty nicely <3
We've got a follow-up in 2-3 weeks for her kidney issues that was already planned so he'll be able to check in then as well with how it's doing x
That's great news her toe isn't broken, that is surprising. It is possible that the nail bed will heal up
allowing the nail to regrow. I hope so. Hopefully it will heal up quickly for her.
Let us know how things are going!
