URGENT! Beardie keeps biting tongue

I’ve noticed that for about a little over a month my bearded dragon (with MD) seems to get her tongue stuck everytime she eats or drinks water. It’s almost as if her tongue is getting in the way and she has some struggles with it. It wasn’t until a day ago when I fed her some mealworms I noticed a line of red on the side of her tongue. Today after her meal I noticed it was worse. There was swelling and other red spots on her tongue/ bleeding that I assume was caused by her bitting her tongue. Does this have something to due with her MD? How can I help her and prevent infection/getting worse.

Hello,

Poor thing, it looks like she is definitely having some trouble. For now, get some raw unpasteurized
honey to put on the tongue to help with healing.
It appears she may have some calcium issues which is most likely what is causing the muscle control
problems with the tongue. Are you giving calcium on a regular basis?
Which type/brand of UVB light are you using for her?

I dust her food with calcium containing no d3 then calcium (with d3) once in a while for every other day. The brand I use for her UVB is “Zoo Med ReptiSun T5 10.0 High Output Terrarium Hood”. Her tongue as of right now is the same as it was last night. Still swollen with red spots where she bit herself. I don’t think she’s bleeding anymore though. Do you recommend to start syringe feeding her along with the raw honey you mentioned so her tongue can heal faster and reduce infection? I was planning to syringe feed until her tongue gets better. Do you know if she will always have problems with her tongue? I’ve noticed she also always starts rubbing her face on things like if shes frustrated :(. I’m not sure if that has anything to do with MD or with her tongue issues.

Also what brand of raw honey do you recommend ?

Local Hive, Raw & Unfiltered, 100% U.S. Texas Honey Blend, 16 oz Bottle

Is this one okay for her tongue? ^

Hello,

Yes, that honey should be fine. As Karrie suggested, giving it straight onto her tongue wont hurt her
at all.
Ok, so the Reptisun 10 T5 is a long tube bulb correct? How far from her is it? I'm sorry, I didn't see
you had mentioned she had muscular dystrophy. How long has she had that?
You can start syringe feeding for awhile if you need to so she gets adequate nutrition right now to
allow her tongue to heal up. Perhaps you could try some CBD for her, if she has trouble with the
muscular dystrophy.
How is she doing today?

Hello Tracie yes the uvb I have is a long linear light and it’s about 12 inches above her. About a little over a week of having her I noticed her walk started getting wobbly and she couldn’t stand up on any of her legs so I assumed it was MBD at first, but once I saw other videos of MD dragons behaviors i saw that’s exactly how she looked. This was about 2 months ago. I put some raw honey on her tongue yesterday but later that night before bed I heard her walking around rubbing her face into things because her tongue was really bothering her. This morning when she was basking I got a picture of her tongue. It seems to have turned white now but I don’t see any bleeding. Today I will go get a syringe for her so I can start syringe feeding her until her tongue gets better. I’m just concerned that she’ll always have issues with her tongue and she’ll never be able to eat insects on her own again.

Hello,

The mouth is looking better. Are you still using the honey for her right now? If there are still any raw spots, you can continue to use it, since it is very safe.
That is very sad, there have been some cases like this, that vets were diagnosing as Muscular Dystrophy. There have been some people who have tried CBD oil for help with Muscular Dystrophy symptoms, with success.
Keep us updated on how she is doing.

Hello,
I have been given her some of the raw honey directly on her tongue as well as including it in her syringe feedings. She is still biting on her tongue though :(. Every time I give her any water/syringe food she snips her tongue during chewing and it starts to bleed. I also notice it’s uncomfortable for her because after a while she starts rubbing her face on things like her tongue is bothering her.

Also since I started syringe feedings containing some protein and mixed greens I’ve noticed her poop is becoming more watery is that normal? Before we had this tongue issue and she was eating live insects herself her poop was more hard and shaped now it looks like this. Is this normal?.

I just noticed I think she threw up a little bit of her syringe feeding food :( not sure if it’s because she’s not used to it or because it contains too much stuff. I included mixed greens, raw honey, some bee pollen, and some repashy superfood.

Hello,

Keep the amount of food given small for now, until she gets used to getting food that way. Maybe cut back
on the superfood a little bit because it is rich in nutrients & calories.
I hope she is feeling better, it does take time for them to recover. Let us know how she is doing.

Hey! I'm planning on ordering a 4x2x2 for my next beardie but I'm worried about lighting. I have a UVA and a UVB but they are small (the UVA just being a bulb and the UVB being 12 ish inches?) My house is drafty so I need a strong light that puts off quite a good amount of heat, any suggestions?
cookie event at my library today, quite fun! Made some bracelets for my comrades too, to give them at church in the morning. Got a busy day tomorrow even though I’m off work… i go back on tuesday so atleast I’ll have 2 days off to rewind….then back to hell lol
The head tilt tho! Aaaahhh
