I had meant to post the day of arrival (11/06/24) but besides being busy, I was still a little too grieved about Ardie to really come back and post for a while. Still missing him, but the waves at least aren’t hitting as hard so I’m going to take the opportunity to officially introduce Tyr on this forum:
Tyr (pronounced "TEAR") is a 1-year-old male Red Monster who was originally to be a breeder for Hellfire Dragons, but after developing a bit of an underbite, Nicole ultimately decided to have him rehomed as a pet-only so not to pass what is most likely a genetic defect. Normally I’m not into red morphs because I prefer the vibes of orange beardies, but Tyr caught my eye as I was grief-browsing around MorphMarket. Of course, given how RMs are a newer morph with early linebreeding and I really wanted to minimize my chances of another premature death like Ardie’s, I did my due diligence on his background. His parents were healthy and there’s been multiple outcrossings in his lineage including with a Japanese line (I was particularly hoping for international outcrossing given the inevitable bottlenecking that happens within national populations) so that did help put my mind at ease.
So I moved forward with it, got the whole setup I had been planning to give Ardie, and Tyr safely arrived. Unfortunately he took a massive dump in his transport bag that I could instantly smell when I opened the box and was forced to give him a bath before he can settle down at all from relocation stress because he had poop smeared all over his feet and vent. So he was of course pretty mad at me on the first day. So much for first impressions.
Fortunately, he at least accepted my peace offering of a big juicy hornworm and happily munched down superworms and a piece of butternut squash (which I was told is his favorite veggie) but I so far have had to make him mad at me again with another bath on the second day because he smeared his poo everywhere and again a few days ago, though that third wasn't so bad because I only needed to do a partial bath.
He's been steadily warming up to me and Nicole has been keeping in contact with me and been super helpful with letting me know his likes and dislikes and stuff. At least he seems to like the snuggle sling and is happy to cuddle with me, but he's still jumpy at me inside his enclosure, either flinching or running away if I reach in and/or pet him. So right now I'm trying to let him fully acclimate to the enclosure now that he's not constantly smearing his poop on himself.
And that's it for now. I still miss Ardie very much and neither Tyr nor anyone else can never replace him, but Tyr's presence is helping me cope better for sure. I hope that wherever Ardie is now, he can feel the love I'm still giving him through Tyr and I hope that Tyr can at least live the long life Ardie never got.
