Toothless eye

We went and the vet was confident enough to send Toothless home, despite the supposed inclement weather that may strand us at the house for a few days. On the way home, I noticed his eye was swollen.? I sent a photo to the vet, but she said she couldn't see much swelling, which turned out to be my fault, it was a shoddy photo. But when I sent another one, the girl at the desk said she may not respond this late. It doesn't seem to be hurting him, and I can't tell if he was keeping it closed because of the swelling or being so tired/sick, but it is weeping just a clear fluid type stuff, like a watery eye. Wtf do we do.? Do we just suck it up and load him back up and drive him the hour and a half back up there.? Or does it seem like he'll be okay.? I don't know. I dont want to be trapped down there because if we are and lose power here at home, we'll have more pressing issues. I dont know wtf to do.

Hello,

Did his eye just start swelling today? Is there anything that he could have gotten in it? The other eye is
normal, correct? A lot of times, swelling like this indicates possible renal or heart issues, or simply an area
behind the eye such as a tear or eye duct infection, a cyst or abscess.
You can try putting a warm compress on it daily to see if that helps out. If the swelling doesn't go down,
another vet visit would be recommended.

Oh jesus 😳
I'm worried for your little man, that looks bad to me. Personally I'd probably be going right back to the vet. If he is already there he iscan hour and a half closer to help if he needs it. Man I hope he pulls through this 🫂

The other eye looks a little iffy, but the vet said it could be his heart. She told us his heart or the vessels are possibly enlarged. Poor guy, things don't look good.

With our luck, it started snowing pretty heavily so we're basically stuck for the next day or two. He's got his head up some but doesn't look good at all and is taking slow, deep breaths 🥺🥺

His eye looks a little better but not by much. I mean, maybe he's supposed to be one of those buggy eyed lizards and being rehydrated fixed it.? The vet said his eyes could he because of the fluids. But I know it's most likely not, but it doesn't seem to bother him really. He's breathing deep and slow because his lungs are being pressed on by his fat pads -- she said they were the largest she's ever seen in a beardie and calculated he's about 40% overweight and wants him on a pretty aggressive weight loss treatment. A small salad a day, 6 crickets once a week, a total of like 6 calories a day. She wants him to go from 720 to 430. With being sick and how much he loves sleeping, I know he'll be extra bleh from his tramadol last night.

Upside is he's got his head up today, eyes open and looking around, tracking movement and is mildly alert. He even crawled off my leg and moved toward the end of the bed because he saw Miko. So I'm hopeful still. 😮‍💨🥺

That is cautiously good news. We are all pulling for the little guy.
Side note. He has scared me into reevaluating how I feed mine. Two of mine are for sure going on a diet and starting an exercise program (I just don't know what that consist of yet)

Right.?? Like when we saw how aggressive his diet was, I was like holy moly. She wants him to have two soaks a day and I put him in the tub and he loves water so he lunged to drink it, but I dunno if he hurt himself because of his gall stones or what, but when he rose up and arched his body, it was like his back legs/body...spasmed.? And then he sort of tumbled sideways, like they gave out or something. Or maybe he even just lost his balance because he slipped in the water, I dont even know. Chris wants to take him back to uga, because of the weather, and our window to be able to do that is closing fast. But I'm not sure, it's hard to say, I kind of agree but... ugh it's too stressful.

I had gall stones 20 plus years ago. They don't hurt then 2 minutes later your sure your dying. I almost did die. The doctor botched the surgery and I spent a full year in and out of the hospital trying to recover. They are no joke. They now have meds to break them up. I hope they have meds for beardies that do the same.
I could for sure see them knocking your boy off his feet if they hurt beardies the way they hurt us.
This is breaking my heart for you guys. I think I agree with Chris though, if you can safely get him back to the vet, I probably would.

Thats what the vet said it basically wss like for them, saying thats why it happened so qucikly. She did give us a medicine to help move bile through the gallbladder, has used it before but there isnt anything regarding uses in beardies published, but aside from the real low possibility of the med causing the tiny stones to move and block a duct, she said itd basically either help his gallbladder or wouldnt do anything. I've never had gallstones, that sounds freaking awful. Jeez I'm glad you're doing better now.

We had a talk with the vet and based on the way I described him and how today went, she's still pretty confident about him being okay to be home and that we can hospitalize him, but they won't be doing anything differently than we are, except if he crashes.

To make it more stressful, our power went out earlier so we were scrambling to get our stuff together to go to a hotel, just so we can ensure they're warm. But then it came back on so hopefully it stays on. I've got 16 body warmers, which are like the hand warmers but are like 5 inches long so hopefully that and our body heat (if need be) will be enough, worst case.

He's doing okay still, after the whole shower thing, I think he hurt his gallstones because he was pretty bleh after but I think if the roads permit, we may bring Toothless back to uga, just so I can slightly lessen the amount of stress I'm having. He wants to feel better, though, I think. He spent a lot of the afternoon just staring at me and keeps pressing his snout into my face. So hopefully he keeps perking up as the days go on.

Wow, poor fella. I know how stressed you guys are too and then the snow and trying too decide whether to back to uga or go home. I am surprised that they recommended 2 soaks a day, if he drinks that's good but he's in delicate condition and can aspirate easily. Once a day at most or every other day to lower the risk of aspiration , make sure the water is warmish and only about 3/4" deep. Lift him out very slowly after he drinks so it doesn't push it back up his throat and choke him.

When I was in Washington the power went out a lot. I kept the car full of gas just in case. When it was out I'd sit inbthe carxwith the heat running to keep mine warm. Please do not idle your car in the garage though. Carbon monoxide is a silent deadly killer. I suspect it would effect beardies faster than us to.

Hello,

Poor guy! How is he doing this evening, still more alert I hope?
Did they have any suggestions on how to treat his gall stones, medication or supplementation/diet?
You could try using some black or tart cherry juice to help with renal function & just overall cleaning
the blood, etc. I can try to do some research for you, regarding gall stones, etc. I just noticed, what
medication did the vet give for the gall stones?
As far as heart issues, they could give a diuretic possibly. Dandelion root is very good for help as
diuretic activity.
Please keep us posted on his condition.

Does this look like a healthy beardie

Hey! I'm planning on ordering a 4x2x2 for my next beardie but I'm worried about lighting. I have a UVA and a UVB but they are small (the UVA just being a bulb and the UVB being 12 ish inches?) My house is drafty so I need a strong light that puts off quite a good amount of heat, any suggestions?
cookie event at my library today, quite fun! Made some bracelets for my comrades too, to give them at church in the morning. Got a busy day tomorrow even though I’m off work… i go back on tuesday so atleast I’ll have 2 days off to rewind….then back to hell lol
The head tilt tho! Aaaahhh
