As the title says, I'm thinking of switching to Phoenix. Not sure if I will make them the staple or not, but either way I want to start feeding my boy some. I don't know much information about them though. I know they are a lot richer in calcium, so does that mean I don't cover them with my calcium supplement when I feed him with them? How do I take care of them? And lastly, my boy is almost 5 months and 17 inches, what size do I get them for him?
and any great online ordering suggestions for them would be great.
thank you in advance
Phoenix worms are black soldier fly larvae, maggots. You dont have to dust them bc they are alrdy high in calcium from what I understand. Ive gotten them once b4 and I can tell you the smalls are RLLY small. I imagine you can get the large or if theres an xtra large, they are soft bodied so I dont believe impaction would be an issue (if Im wrong there someone plz correct me) Even so an XL maggot isnt so very big... I ordered mine from phoenixworm.com and you leave them in the container they come in and NOT in the frig, and they keep for quite some time.
I just ordered some from pheonixworm.com and they have a sample pack available for 5.99. I ordered the medium ones, and with shipping itcame out to 11ish dollars.
Just to give you a heads up before you make a huge purchase (and spend about $30) to see if they are interested in them!
Thank you for the information! Sadly i tried to buy too late from phoenixworms.com today so they won't ship till monday. Anyone know a website that will ship on thursday? I remember i saw one but i dont remember anymore
I would suggest sticking with ordering directly from phoenixworms.com. I've ordered from a couple places and was pretty disappointed in the quality. Stores that sell will have them on the shelves a while before shipping. Fresh is best! My last order of 500 has lasted over a month now, down to about 20 left. They also give you about a 10% overcount, we ended up with 600+ in our order for 500.
Just my .02$ but I found them to be scary. Don't know how to put it other than that. They gave me the vibe of something that would burrow under my skin... So make sure you can stomach them before you buy a whole bunch. When I do buy them it is infrequently and only as many as I can feed out in 1-2 days.
I was told you do in fact still need to dust them if using as a staple. 2x a week for vitamin and about the same for calcium. When you dust more than 2x a week with the calcium you run the risk of OD them on calcium, but just the PW on their own comes up a little shy of calcium needed for juvies.
I have repti-worms,but mostly the same thing. The packing will come off my worms easily,I kind of dust them off and clean them off, others run them under a little water and it will all come off! Whatever seems to work best for you!!
Most places I've seen don't ship on Thrusdays because of the post office being closed on sundays, then the bugs would just "sit" at the post office during that time.
