Temporary Relocating for the Holidays

Hello everyone! This upcoming December, me and my baby boy will be traveling back home to Chicago for Christmas break. I am a college student that attends school in North Carolina. My baby boy Blayz is doing very good!! (I’ve had him about a month now).

I want to bring him back to Chicago with me because I don’t want to leave him in North Carolina with either a sitter or my grandma because I don’t want to leave him for that long. Plus I want him to meet the rest of the family back home. Any tips of transporting him back home for the holidays? Also what about transporting his tank enclosure and lighting??

Hi there ! Does your grandma know how to take care of him ? How big is his tank ?

Blayz is a very nice looking boy and he posed in the cutest position as if to politely ask " excuse me but can you help us out please" ?

Haha Blayz appreciates the nice compliment :) But regarding my grandma, she has never dealt with a pet other than a cat or dog so no. He’s also in a 40 gallon tank but he’s getting it upgraded to a bigger size very soon!!

You could probably just put his tank in your back seat but of course take any heavy decor that might shift around out or lay it down. You can put the lights in a plastic tote with some crumpled newspaper or right in the tank if they will fit. Blayz can be put in a small pet carrier or even a plastic shoe box lined with paper towels, including some that are crumpled up. Don't feed him that morning at all, keep the temp. about 76 in the vehicle. He should be fine like that although it might be stressful.

Thanks for the advice! In case I may have to explore the flying route, have you ever used those shipping services such as “reptiles2you” or “shipyourreptiles”? I have seen videos on YouTube of people using them with no problem but I would like to hear your thoughts on that option :).

No, I was selling them and shipped them to their new homes. If you had to ship his enclosure it would be very costly I think and I don't have any advice about that. You might really think about taking it all with you when you drive, you'll save a ton of money and will be much less complicated.

When I was moving from one place to another, I ordered a huge truck, and for my lovely dragon, I rented a luxury car with all the comforts. It was really hard for me—I was so worried about him—so I went all out on comfort and safety. You should definitely do the same.
One more piece of advice: prepare some extra food to help calm your pet, as they might get very scared due to all the activity and changes happening around them.

UPDATE: I got him home nice and safely and he is now thriving in his secondary home in Chicago 😆. I used ShipYourReptiles which had me very nervous and praying nonstop but he arrived to my home in perfect shape and was very excited to see me! Of course he was a little tired and a tad cold upon arrival since it’s winter but I had his tank up and ready for him.

Thank you all for your recommendations and advice! I’d definitely be keeping you guys in mind if I ever needed to relocate in the future 😄.
