My son got his bearded dragon about a month ago. When we first got him, it looked like there was a small spot on his tail. It has since gotten worse. I have attached a photo. About 2 days ago it looked like the spot had some dried blood on it. Now today it looks a bit worse, might even look like the tip of his tail is going to fall off. Is there something I can do to help? Should he be taken to a vet?

That does not look good -- please get some raw unfiltered honey like Manuka on that tail asap-- thats going to stop the infection -from going any further please NO crickets in the tank they will go straight to the tail - I am going to have AHBD take a look and have her advise as well

Ok, will do. Thanks for the heads up about the crickets, that didn’t cross my mind.

Hi, yeah that is a problem and looks like from that spot on down the tail is dying. You can soak it in a betadine water mix [ 1 prt betadine to 10 parts ] water] Put the mixture in a cup or glass if you can dangle his tail in it. Otherwise set him in a shallow bowl with the mixture [ lukewarm so it's not too cold for him ]
It would be good to see a reptile vet because at times amputation is necessary because the infection is traveling up the tail under the scales. Hopefully all goes well, update us with how it goes !

Hello,

I agree, I would try to get a vet appointment. The tail might have to be amputated at slightly above the injury point, but not positive. Try the treatments AHBD & Karrie suggested. Perhaps the end will shrivel up & die
without a major infection developing.
Is his appetite doing ok?

a poem by AHBD (THANK YOU SO MUCH! I LOVE IT!)

Sir Henry the dragon
Looking for his dragon girl
Ventures out in to the wide world
His hopes are up but as you can see
There is no dragon girl for Sir Henry
A light bulb goes off and he takes mom aside
Could you perchance get me a mail order bride ?
