so after alot of thinking im putting dexter on superworms as his main staple due to they dont smell, low maintance and just plain easy haha butttttt ..... i have read on here that the superworms can eat through the plastic bug tub container they come in...so i have them sitting in a rubermaid comtainer just incase they get out. but i am ordering like 600 of the things and cant just keep them like that at would like to put allll of them in one contaner....dirt and alll. Can they chew out of a rubermaind contaner if i were to just dump them in there?
what do other ppl do?
do you have pictures of what you keep them in?
** im not breading them just so you know haha ill just keep buying them
ive never heard of superworms eating through plastic. I have kept superworms in a plastic tote for a long time and they have never eaten through it or nothing. you can use a regular rubbermaid tub, 10 g tank, whatever you want. you just want to make sure you give them a good substrate like oatmeal, wheat bran, etc. and also potato slices or carrots.
ya i read on here about a couple that keep them in there closet and just left them in the regurlar bug tub and they ate through it and got out in the closet and ate though there carpet in the closet and they ended up haveing to rip it all out to get all the 100 worms. and i read other stories about the same thing....so it does happen but thanks its good to know a rubbermaid will work good. does the weat bran have to be all crummbled up? and then they just live in that? they are in dirt right now.....
I also use a Rubbermaid container and never had and problems! And I just use the old fashioned oat meal, the one by Quaker oats! Yes they live in it and eat it!! When it collects about an inch of frass (POOP) on the bottom, just clean it out and refresh the oatmeal!! Hope this helps..
how long on average would you say your supers are living for?? I just got about 500 a couple weeks ago and I have many dead ones(at least I think they are dead) so what gives? I have them in a couple inches of bran and they get apple slices for moisture and I even throw in some uneaten greens that elliott doesnt finish. I would really like keep ordering 500 to 1000 at a time but not if they are going to die before i get a chance to feed them
yes I am using them as a staple. I introduced a few at a time to make sure he digested them well and didnt have problems though before I bought 500 of them. He eats about 15-25 a day on average. usually after about 10 though he is done.
sometimes when you get worms from a distributor they are feed a brewers yeast, or at least its my assumption because i have had the same die off problem with ones i received from other sources. . . however the ones that i breed seem to do fine with very few if any die offs. . . its just my assumption that something is off with the care of these other supers.
Yeah I usually get 1 or 2 dead each week! But it is normal. I just feed them the oatmeal and potatoes for water!! Its also possible if you use any kind of food or other feed there could be some mold somewhere in there! I would comb through it and see if you see any green anywhere! If you do I would change the substrate out..Also ditch putting the greens in there I would stick to potato's or apple slices!!Hope this helps...
