The thinking is that the aromatic compounds in cedar and (to a lesser extent) pine can cause respiratory problems leading to decreased immune response causing secondary infection issues and possible skin lesions. This was extracted from data taken from bird and rodent studies though. I think the lack of direct test results leads to a lack of current or conclusive answers on this. I think a lot of people have decided to just take a cautious approach and avoid it.
