I recent got my beardie in the mail and I noticed the insulation was 1" thick styrofoam. I have 4 pieces that are 12"x17". My question is, if I make just simple steps and ledges do I really have to grout it, or can I use textured spray paint and use multiple layers (5-6) of mod podge to seal it? I already built a wooden (maple) platform with a ramp, but thought I'd make use of the insulation.
Spray paint will dissolve most (all?) polystyrene foam. The grout also adds some strength to the foam so it's more durrable. You might be able to seal it, then paint it but unless it's 100% sealed the paint will get in and dissolve the foam.
Did not know that. Thanks taterbug! The foam isn't going to be used like other faux rocks/hides. Just as "accents" and texture. What if sealed it then painted and sealed it a few more times?
Hard to say - a few days to a week, or till the smell is gone. I haven't used it for my stuff so I'm not sure how safe it is, I'd dig around a little on the reptile/fish/amphibian boards to check.
