Just received Dexter's new mega ray in the mail today. I already own 2 of these and love them but this one came in different from my other ones. It has a white chulky powder all over it on the outside. My other ones are almost crystal clear in color. I plugged it in, and got it set up to burn in for a few days and immediately the bulb turned burnt brown...? This can't be normal right?
No one is answering at the phone number provided, being as late as it is I'm sure they are closed, but this is all too frustrating since this is for our rescue beardie, and when all they sell at these miserable pet stores around me is the repti glo and power sun crap.
He is under a powersun mvb 160 watt right this moment. It was going to have to work for another 48 hours while the mega ray burnt in anyway. I know there hasn't been any reports of eye damage from the 160w power sun and only the 100 watts are bad, but I don't trust it at all regardless. I'm definitely going to have to return this, I was just curious if anyone else has ran into it before? Seems like I might have gotten a customer return on accident because it was definitely bad when I took it out of the box.
I'm in no way trying to slander the mega ray, they are beautiful working bulbs and I already own 2 of them. Amazing product and customer service, just a disappointing set back for Dexter because of the time to burn in, now needs a return shipping, replacement, send back, and burn in all over again. Which leaves Dexter under a powersun mvb for a week or more.
Just got an email back, apparently this is a frosting on the bulb to make sure that the UV rays are not too high and it IS actually supposed to look like this when turned on. Everything should be ok!
Yes, got it right from the source. Pretty much copied and pasted my thread with the pictures and sent it there way. This was the response.
Yes, this is actually a known issue. We had a batch of bulbs come in that we had to actually frost down to ensure the level of UV was appropriate. If you seen it peeling then we will get a replacement out to you, but only about 2% of our customer base is having a problem with the bulb actually peeling. Let me know if you are a part of that group.
And then I responded with a "are you really really sure?" And this was the response:
Ken, even when I tested the bulbs at the site they looked burnt when running. If you see peeling, just take the bulb out and let me know. I won't let you down, promise.
i dont know you already have 2 of them before this one you know how its suppose to look like to me it seems his just trying to sell you that bulb. remember that his job is selling not taking back merchandise you loose if you get something return but thats just me saying
Bob & co. over at MegaRay will not sell you a bad product. If you are having a problem, they will replace it no problem. I have never had a bad experience with them, and I truly believe that Bob has the welfare of our reptiles as his highest priority.

I agree completely. I've never had a bad dealing with Bob either. In the past Bob has returned my call after business hours to answer my questions, and this case with John is no different. These emails were very late at night and he replied instantly to all 3 of my emails to reassure me they did not sell me a bad product, that this is how the frosting is supposed to behave. I will definitely be keeping a close eye on it for peeling.
