Thank you! I've gone back and forth about this site as a possible source of silkworms since they only sell them small to medium in mixes, but I may actually go for it once Tyr can eat hard shells again.

For now, I went with Coastal again so I can get about a month's supply of silkworms while Tyr's mouth is recovering. Thank you for the recommendation!

Okay, it's been almost a couple weeks since my last update and while the lump is smapler than before, it's also not getting any further than that.

You can't tell from this photo, but it only flips out like that if I'm prying Tyr's mouth open (which he still does NOT appreciate, lol). I can still see the two little pink dots at the bottom so now I'm stumped what the heck's going on. Almost out of silkworms too, which seem to have helped with shrinking initially but it doesn't look like the lump is getting any smaller. I'm a tad concerned about stressing him if I take him to the vet, but his appetite has been as good as ever.

Is it worth risking the stress and loss of appetite if I take him to get it biopsied?

I probably would. But I'm paranoid 🙂

Hello,

So it hasn't really gotten any smaller? It would be stressful to get a biopsy, so that is up to you. If it isn't getting better, it should be considered.

How long does it usually take for a bug bite to heal? Just for reference.

I'll definitely take him to the vet if it doesn't get any better for longer.

I've had a chancre sore in my own mouth I've been stuck with for close to a month last year, so I have no idea if it could be similar in beardies. Either way, I really want this thing healed especially after seeing it get irritated by a discoid.

EDIT: Couldn't get a photo either time, but I was able to see when Tyr gaped a couple times that the swelling is barely visible now, with just a bit of the posterior facing side sticking out. So, I think it has shrunken by a lot since before it stuck out enough for me to instantly freak out a bit.

I'll keep you all posted, as usual. Here's hoping it's just a sore taking its sweet time to heal.

EDIT2: I pried his mouth open for a closer look and of course it looks more reddish and puffy again today. I'm probably gonna go ahead and reach out to the reptile vet near me to at least get an idea of things. Even if it turns out benign, I just don't think it's good either way to have an easily injured lump of flesh in the mouth.

Found a reptile vet here with over 30 years of experience and described as one of the leading experts in reptile medicine in the nation. I found an opening at a good time for me this Thursday, so hopefully they get me in just fine (the office isn't open today, so I was just booking online). Fingers crossed it's just a really stubborn sore that can go away with proper therapy...

Hello,

Reptiles heal up slowly. Depending on the severity of the insect bite, it would likely take weeks for it to begin
healing. I agree, it's definitely not ideal for them to have
a fleshy mouth wound because it most likely affects his
ability to chew as effectively as he needs to.
That''s great you found a reptile vet to get him in to see.
Let us know how the vet visit goes & how he is doing.
I hope it is just a mouth wound that is having trouble with healing.

Sorry for taking so long with the update! If’s been a very busy few months, but Tyr is doing great!

So the vet I saw gave us 6 doses of ceftazidime injections with the first dose given in clinic. Basically, he suspects it could be infected with how slowly it was healing and we decided to treat with antibiotics first and we’ll check for a mass if it doesn’t improve.

Well that plus avoiding crunchy bugs actually did the trick and Tyr’s mouth is almost fully healed as you can see below.

It unfortunately got a bit bigger again after I fed him the last of his roaches because he was REALLY hankering for bugs after going a few days without (I had butterworms the past week because silkworms made his stool too watery but he gobbled them up so fast TwT).

I’m gonna see if Symton’s large BSFL are bigger than the other suppliers I’ve gotten them from since I don’t to do silkworms again and butterworms are a tad annoying to get ahold of lol.

As a funny aside, Tyr apparently is fine with getting stuck with a needle and only reacts to the cold medicine going in. He just really hates having his mouth forced open (and baths). 🤣

Bless his heart, but I'm happy he is healing up 🙂

Hello,

Thanks for the updates on little Tyr! He is definitely doing better. It was a flesh type wound so it is taking
awhile to heal up. It likely becomes irritated quite easily. Every so often some crunchy bugs are fine, but
softer worms, etc are probably easier for him at the moment.
He looks happy too!

Does this look like a healthy beardie

Aww your profile picture is precious ❤️‍🩹
Hey! I'm planning on ordering a 4x2x2 for my next beardie but I'm worried about lighting. I have a UVA and a UVB but they are small (the UVA just being a bulb and the UVB being 12 ish inches?) My house is drafty so I need a strong light that puts off quite a good amount of heat, any suggestions?
cookie event at my library today, quite fun! Made some bracelets for my comrades too, to give them at church in the morning. Got a busy day tomorrow even though I’m off work… i go back on tuesday so atleast I’ll have 2 days off to rewind….then back to hell lol
