Soft Pink Mass In Mouth?

I noticed a little soft lump in Tyr's mouth while relaxing with him a bit ago when he gaped (he was taken out of his enclosure a little before that so I imagine he was letting off some heat) and, given how I'd lost Ardie not too long ago, got a little paranoid and checked in his mouth to take the photo attached below.

He's of course annoyed at me for prying his mouth open but doesn't seem to be in pain (and he was happily chomping away at his fresh shipment of bugs earlier) and checking again just now, it looks like the color has faded to match the rest of his gums. I did some searching and saw that sometimes bug bites can cause the swelling, but I just want to confirm with everyone else that this isn't something to freak out about just yet.

I had earlier also just brushed his teeth with a q-tip with diluted iodine on one end and then a rinse with just water on the other, so hopefully if it is from a bug bite, it heals up fast.

@Drache613 is probably the best person to ask.

I should also mention I have my current enclosure specs in my profile.

Tyr is presently just snoozing on me and maintaining warmth through my body heat. He's not amused by me periodically checking his mouth so it's hard to get another photo, but it's halfway solid pink like the gums are halfway reddish. Definitely sitting inside of where the teeth are.

Texture looks like a papilloma. I know humans can get benign oral papillomas, but no idea if that can happen in beardies. Heard that some beardies just have random harmless bits of flesh in the mouth?

EDIT: It is now reddish in the middle sandwiched between two normal pink hues. Still can't get a photo because Tyr will push me off and get in my face. 😂

It might be a good idea to have a vet take a look, just on case.
If it is something that can become an issue the sooner they treat it the better.

if it doesn't go away on its own, I may do that. Seems like it's getting smaller now and I'm pretty sure I did not see it the other day, but we shall see.

After angling more carefully, I think I spotted a couple small punctures. Finally managed to get fresh shots too. Looks like he did get nipped by a superworm so I'm going to be dabbing the spot with more iodine.

Hello,

The bug bites can definitely cause mouth trauma & it is fairly common. Do keep an eye on the area,
& what you are doing now, using the iodine daily to keep it clean should help. You can also use some
raw unpasteurized honey on the area too for help with healing.
If it starts to look infected or changes appearance, it would be a good idea to visit the vet.

Will do! Thank you, Tracie!

I'm probably going to be grabbing manuka honey when I make a trip to the grocery later since I imagine he'd at least like the taste better than iodine, lol.

The swelling looks a lot better today in any case.

Be careful giving honey orally, might be a lot of sugar if treated repeatedly over several days ( I'm not a doctor though so take it with a grain of salt)

tbf, the same can be said of iodine and anything else applied to the mouth except the concern is of toxicity rather than blood sugar levels. And in any case, it's only a very teeny-tiny amount on a q-tip to dab on a wound, so just a few days should be fine (mouth sores heal very quickly if kept clean and disinfected because of the high turnover of epithelial cells making up the mucosa). If anything, Tyr is getting more sugar from the bee pollen I sometimes have to put on his salads, lol. Appreciate the concern though!

Update for Tyr: SO, the swelling was coming down slowly but surely over the past week with manuka honey and iodine treatment. Still awfully slow for a mouth wound though so I decided to look in Tyr's mouth as I was feeding him hard shelled bugs today and LO, the shells were of course making the site bleed. >81

Guess I'm sticking with BSFL with hornworms as a treat until the site finishes healing since it seems supers and roaches irritate/re-injure the spot. Also gonna try getting some silkworms, so here's hoping there are medium or large ones in stock.

Where are you getting them from?

Everything except the superworms are from Dubia. I got the superworms from Petsmart because it's just the right amount and those new transparent containers are nice. Does supplied affect the hardness or something? The crunchy bugs Tyr's getting are discoid roaches and supers.

For the silkworms, I may got for Coastal, which was where I generally got them in the past.

Hey! I'm planning on ordering a 4x2x2 for my next beardie but I'm worried about lighting. I have a UVA and a UVB but they are small (the UVA just being a bulb and the UVB being 12 ish inches?) My house is drafty so I need a strong light that puts off quite a good amount of heat, any suggestions?
cookie event at my library today, quite fun! Made some bracelets for my comrades too, to give them at church in the morning. Got a busy day tomorrow even though I’m off work… i go back on tuesday so atleast I’ll have 2 days off to rewind….then back to hell lol
