Ugh, those hummingbirds have been thorns. 2 attempts to print 3 failed. First print was "good" but needed support for the hanger (ornaments) which I added. Printed three and the supports let go at 70%. Increased initial supports and reprint. Let go at 40%. Realized when I started again from scratch that the initial file is too small and has to be reconfigured as mm. Which it does after you ok. So when I increased the size again it still had supports setup for a smaller print.

This time I changed the support style, did all the other changes I had previously done to increase strength etc... New one should actually print faster with the revised support structure.

Last nights failure about the same time in, but only about 30 percent instead of almost 50. That was 3, but you can see the difference in supporting structure.

After this finishes (looking good) printing this for the mother in law. They have a lot of flying squirrels at their house.

After following this thread I realize 3D printing is probably very far out of my own will house lol. I think I'll stick to just following this thread 🙂

It's actually not bad. I'm learning. The standard filament has been great. The cat toy failed, but learning this harder to print filament has taught me a lot and I could probably easily print that cat toy now after learning about the support structure differences. I'm printing a lot of things out of the wrong material to learn. I bought the filaments knowing I would waste a lot. Most of what I have printed has been almost flawless. I haven't sanded anything yet. There are parts I could sand for a perfect finish like the mushroom cap. But I feel I might ruin the way light passes through some of the prints. I'm sure polishing etc.... but is it needed? Not really.
The few minor flaws I do see in prints (translucent in particular) are mainly due to how it's being laid out. The hummingbirds taught me how to eliminate those lines in print by simply changing the design of the infill until I find one that prints cleaner.

I am far from 3D, but I understand that the surface of the product will be stepped. Is it possible to somehow achieve a glossy surface? Maybe by grinding or special liquids that dissolve plastic?

The steps are very very small these days. You can alter the appearance by adjusting step size. Larger will print faster, but show the steps. The remote caddy I could have printed faster because it's basically a rectangle. The surface printing (see wing edges) can be made in spiral, hexagon, etc... patterns to accentuate the surface like on the dart blaster part in white.

The infill pattern can be seen here. Standard criss cross pattern, but can be spiral etc... which alters the way light passes through and presents a different look. I should have enough to print another, I'll do that with an Archimedean spiral infill pattern.

I'm printing another hummingbird now. All Archimedean spirals but otherwise the same file, size etc... should take about 40 minutes longer at 2 hr 15 print time. I'll have to check for weight difference after the print.

It even printed two small teeth in the partially open mouth. View attachment 93116
My sister had a pet flying squirrel once. She named him squackers. She raised him from a pinky. He had fallen out of his nest and her husband found him and brought him home. He was a pretty cool lil guy.
She would be giving you a huge thumbs up for that one 👍👍👍👍👍

I'm wondering how multi-color printing works? Does the printer have multiple nozzles? Or does it use one nozzle and somehow clean it when changing colors?

I don't know how popular the cartoon "Adventure Time" is in your area, but I think about it every time I hear about the flying squirrel, there was a funny episode about it. :D

Be prepared that this is a very strange series. Everyone thinks that cartoons are exclusively for children. But everyone watches this one, all the programmers in our IT company are fans of it. I don't know why, maybe it's such a brain workout after work lol. By the way, I want share a video about a flying squirrel, I don't know if anyone here has seen it, but it struck me how smart they are.

Hey! I'm planning on ordering a 4x2x2 for my next beardie but I'm worried about lighting. I have a UVA and a UVB but they are small (the UVA just being a bulb and the UVB being 12 ish inches?) My house is drafty so I need a strong light that puts off quite a good amount of heat, any suggestions?
cookie event at my library today, quite fun! Made some bracelets for my comrades too, to give them at church in the morning. Got a busy day tomorrow even though I’m off work… i go back on tuesday so atleast I’ll have 2 days off to rewind….then back to hell lol
The head tilt tho! Aaaahhh
