Hello
Can't believe I have to consider this. I feel bad for my poor Auzzie. For probably the last...4 or more years she has had issues with laying eggs too often. She lays tons of eggs over a several-month period, and does that several times a year. I think it's a hormonal problem, she can't seem to stop producing them.
She stopps eating every time, of course, I know they stop eating while they are laying eggs, but she lays them for such extended periods of time she ends up going anorexic. She is at the point now where she will NOT eat on her own. I have to take her out and force-feed her by hand every day. That is grueling in itself...since she either poops or 'leaks' water on me every time I put her on my lap now. I have started mixing dogfood (because of the high protien and calories) and my Crested Gecko's superfood in with her normal food. It's like a super fattening super vitamin food, but so far it's not helping much. She is laying eggs at the moment. Her eyes are sunken and her fat reserves are sunken in. Her ribs are showing. I feel terrible and I don't want her to suffer any longer.
Should I continue with the force-feeding or am I just prolonging the inevitable?
What should I do??? My vet does not do reptiles and there are not reptile vets in my vicinity.
She has a 150watt heat lamp and a reptiglo tube light for UV rays. She also has a heat pad/rock thing.
I recommend PMing Tracie (Drache613). I'm sure she'll know, and you may get a faster response that way. I'm sorry I don't have any answers :/ Best of luck!
They can spay reptiles, but it does have risks. it's usually only done in extreme circumstances or if they are already in there and the owner requests it. I would think that this would be one of those circumstances.
I know you said you don't have any vets near you, but it is a possible alternative that would be worthy of further investigation. Even if the vet is a longer drive than you would normally consider. it might be only a trip you'd have to make a few times, if your budget can handle it and the procedure of course.
Other than that, I can offer nothing more than my sympathy. I wish you and your dragon the best.
I don't know if we could afford a spay for a lizard. I think it's out of our budget range. She is 6 years old by the way (Wikipedia says they only live between 6 and 10yrs?) and has never been with a male.
