My little Althea is growing like a weed since I got her in August (from 5 1/8 inches STV to just shy of a foot!). I've noticed just recently that her nails are incredibly sharp. I've also noticed that she has gotten alot stronger lately as well. I'm not sure if the nails have always been sharp like this and her new strength is making them feel sharper. Holding her has been tough lately and on a few occasions she has actually broken skin. Is there anything I can do to help dull her nails a bit?
Yes, you can cut their nails with nail clippers. But you have to be really careful to only trim the very end as there is a blood vessel called the quick in the nail.
What do you use as substrate? If you use tiles it really keeps their nails down.
That's good to know about the nail clippers. I'll give it a try. Right now I'm using the reptile carpet as "substrate." She's in a 40 gallon cage and it was easier to use that. When she is full size, she will have a bigger cage and I plan on using ceramic tile for her substrate. That seems like it would be the easiest way to go.
