Hi there,
Our male has been refusing to eat and making strange gulping sound almost sounds like someone sounds when they are clearing their throat. This has been going to for about 2 months now and gradulay getting worse as to now he wont eat anything unless i force feed.
We took him to the vet this morning and she said his chest didnt sound bad and his heart sounded good and basicly gave us something called SEPTRA - .06 once a day.
I think it is a respiratory infection that is dragging on - but he doesnt have any fluid in the mouth or nose that i can see - he does though sit with his head straight up and also has slept all night like this also ... i read somewhere i think on this site that could also be a sign of and RI.
Anyways will Septra help to clear up a RI if that is indeed what he has?
It should do the trick. Septra can be used for respiratory problems, particularly bronchitis. To avoid complications though, you should make sure your beardie stays hydrated- warm baths, water in droppers... Also, check for runny stool or hard urates. You may have to adjust his diet a bit to counter any side effects. Make sure his temps are good, if not a little higher than usual... quality basking can make recovery quicker.
Get well soon beardie!
Thanks for your reply ... i was just worried that they gave me something for something else as they didnt seem to know what was wrong and i had been reading about alot of people saying they use Batril for RI
I reay think it is a RI - sometimes i think we know better then vets do!
How long do these anitibiotics generaly take affect and you can notice some difference?
Most antibiotics are in full effect within an hour of administration. Obviously, different animals have different recovery time depending on the severity of their condition, but if your dragon is not feeling better in 5 days, I would try something else.
By the way, I get frustrated with the vets in my area too. They make their money on cats, dogs, horses, and "food animals" and don't want to waste their time learning about icky little lizards. Bah!
