My beardie Mimsy has a few scales missing on her chin, I just noticed them today. She’s just about a year old (her birthday is on Monday actually) I watched her scratch off one of them herself. It looks kind of brownish underneath, not like the rest of her skin. She’s normal and active as she’s ever been.
Her viv is 4x2x2 with two elevated platforms she can climb on as she pleases. Substrate consist of excavator clay for the main bottom, and ceramic tiles on the platforms. She gets baths 1-2 times per week. I used to offer her a water dish but I don’t anymore because she just makes a mess with it instead of actually drinking it. Her temps range from ~76-105 degrees, with the coldest part being under some shade, and the hottest being the hottest part of her basking platform, and the ambient temperature being ~82-83 degrees. I use a 160w powersun bulb with an additional ceramic heater for nighttime. I don’t add any additional humidity to her viv. I generally take her out for an hour or two each day to hang out with her and let her run around a little more (supervised of course). She gets fed Dubia roaches, superworms, and veg, (supplemented with calcium) mostly collard greens because she’s picky af. ?
These were the best pictures I managed to get of the missing scales (sorry they’re not the best). Those are the only two spots I’m able to find on her. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Hi there, that doesn't look serious....just some discolored scales or a bit of trauma. You can dab it with a watered down betadine solution 2 X a day, maybe put neosporin on as well just in case.
I can't really see anything wrong with her scales, it could be random discolouration (they do that sometimes) or just a bad scale which would probably regrow with the next shed. My dragon had something similar on her belly (i figured out it was her basking tile (which had some rough edges) damaged her belly scales and they turned yellowish - took her to the vet - ended up giving her antibiotics for nothing because the vet was inadequate - and turned out she's ok! Could it be that she recently had scratched that area to cause it?
Thanks for the replies! It makes me hopeful that others have had similar experiences that turned out to be nothing.
It’s altogether possible that she could have damaged them on something, I hadn’t even considered that. She absolutely loves jumping up onto things, she tries to jump onto whatever she can (she’s not stressed or scared, she just likes exploring). It’s possible that she could’ve smacked her face on a bad landing. XD
I’ll try using the betadine on her as suggested to see if that funny discoloration clears up. Hopefully I’m worrying about nothing.
