After trying to keep the colony going since February, the dubias were as big as my pinky finger. Ruby and Rocky are disinterested and semi brumating. I hated to do it but feeding them, cleaning them....it was too much for too long. They may not eat for another 2 months.

During this time they are a few, definitely some superworms and greens but they can't keep up with that pace. Also, as they age, i need to switch up whereas it's more greens than insects.

What really did it.....today I saw a gnat and got paranoid about parasites. Over 200 dubias are gone but if it's too spare my beardies life's, I had to do it. A waste of money too but I'm telling myself as they continued to reproduce, it...ahhh I simply wasted money.

They lived a good, healthy life but I couldn't! My beardies health mean more. I don't want them choking either.

Did I do the right thing?

You don't want to know where I placed them....

I was actually going to ask what you did with them. If you can recover them, put them on facebook or craigs list someone will want them I bet. 🙂
I don't breed them either, I simply don't have the time to fool with them. I just buy them as needed.

My roach colony is constantly growing.
I usually sell the surplus in my city, and if there are too many, I freeze them.

Why didn't I think of that?

All I started thinking was parasites. I had to clean the container often and when I saw my first gnat I'm thinking how could I put my beardies in danger.

Again, should we expect anything more from the dramatic mom?

I'll know for next time. I also was concerned about the size....so they are able to eat the extra, extra large bugs? If I bought the small or medium to start but I accidentally bought large thinking they'd knock them right out....at least Ruby.

He'd puff himself up and eat 1 or 2 and I monitored his poop regularly to ensure all was well. I could tell it wasn't his thing but at least he got the nutrients that he needed.

At one point, I tried to separate the containers so the males and females would he at a better ratio but Again, so much work.
This makes scared me. I thought they'd fly off at any minute lol

I'll get it together for the next time lol

I never feed adult roaches. I have a "phobia" - it seems to me that adults contain more uric acid. Therefore, adult roaches live with me only to obtain a sufficient number of offspring. I feed roaches about one inch in size or a little smaller. Usually I have 50 females and 10-15 males in the colony, this is enough to feed 10-12 small roaches twice a week. You can slightly adjust the rate of reproduction of roaches by temperature. 82 degrees - they reproduce slowly, 87 - "reactive" reproduction. It is not difficult for me to take care of such a colony. They live on a substrate of oats. Every three days I throw them arugula or dandelions and once every 2 months I change the cardboard egg cells and substrate. Sometimes I can throw in a few apple slices.

This was the post that I needed, ugh. Thanks so much.

The uric acid, maybe that's what I equate to parasites.

Hey, I just saw one of your posts from a few months ago, I’m sorry for your loss of Sweet Pea and Zen, I know that’s really rough, and I’ll keep you in my prayers!
