I recently discovered my beardie had some possible retained shed on her hands. I went out and bought pure cocoa butter and massaged a diluted mixture in to her scales. It seems it has improved the situation as the scales are now turning into flakes. Some flakes are even falling off but I just want to be sure that this is in fact retained shed and not something more serious as I read that scale rot can appear flaky as well. I've also been soaking her daily which is ill-advised if it is scale rot so any advice would be very helpful. The pictures will show exactly what i'm talking about. Also, as pictured, some of the scales are forming transparent tips - another reason why I thinks it just old scales. Maybe i'm over stressing here but you all understand.
im no beardie expert, but to me, it looks like retained shed. the way it darkens on the tip of the scale makes it seem that its just waiting to come off, but dont take my word for it lol, wait until someone more experienced than me posts.
you should still give him a good soak, to see if that helps a little
Thanks dude, I've been bathing her every morning which I why I think it looks the way it does. Hopefully it is just retained shed and it'll flake off soon. She doesn't shows symptoms of illness. She eats like crazy and is well hydrated. After she has her morning bathroom break (ha!) she brightens up in color and has a nice white belly. Then she'll run around like normal until I give her her morning salad. I think I may have been overreacting.
It has been improving somewhat. Thanks for asking. The grey coloring looks as if it is being pushed up so I can only be hopeful. She is also going through a body & left hind leg shed right now and the scales look identical. Also, she has seemed a little grumpy as of late. Mostly tucking away to the sides of the viv. She has done this in the past so I'm not too worried anymore. I will keep you posted though. Thanks again.
