This morning our 7 month old beardie was puffing his beard in and out real fast. I was across the room so I didn't startle him.
He was placed in his new enclosure 2 days ago....desperatly going through phases of trying to get out...jumping up to the screen and hanging by his nails, glass dancing wall climbing etc. The temps are all fine!! But this morning, when I put his food in, his beard turned black and he flared it. NEVER HAS HE DONE THIS BEFORE. Then a few minutes ago I saw the rapid puffing of his beard...Whats up??? Is he extremly pissed off or mad ? I've never seen this behavior with him! HELP, is this normal because of his new home? Today is day 3.
Sounds like he is just upset due to relocation changes. Alvin does puff up his beard every morning to exercise it but he has never black bearded me except when I took him outside. As long as his temps are ok, he is probably just stressed and needs to get used to his new house.
Pookie does the rapid beard puffing every morning too. I call them "morning stretches".
As for your baby hanging onto the screen, try not to let him do that. If you have to, move some viv furniture so he won't be able to climb up that high. Not only could his nails get caught and run the risk of ripping it off, he could lose his grip and fall and hurt himself.
Any changes to their setup is always stressful. I had a beardie who blackbearded and refused to move for 3 days after I changed out the calci sand to paper towels. To say that he hated the paper towels was an understatement.
Many of us well-trained beardie slaves will gradually change the viv one tiny piece at a time. Some of us don't change anything at all, and that includes when the viv furniture has to go back in after being cleaned. Nothing could be even a mere millimeter off from their original placement.
In time, he'll get used to his surroundings and won't be as stressed.
