Pre ovulatory folicular stasis

Hi all,

I took Coco to the vet. Vet said chances are greater of a yolk rupturing than laying of eggs. Although she can’t rule out coco laying eggs naturally she doesn’t think it’s likely.

She suspects they have been there for a good few weeks. With coco not eating she said it’s clearly effecting her. She described coco has chubby but said she is also swollen due to the yolks.

Having gone through the alternatives, I feel surgery is the only realistic option. It breaks my heart to say that. Recovery will be up to 5 days and then a course of antibiotics via an injection.

They can operate on Friday.

Has anyone gone through such surgery?

Vet said coco is young and healthy therefore risks of surgery are low.

So they don't feel she is going to shell them
then? If not & there hasn't been any progress
she could reabsorb them but not always.
I definitely wouldn't want any of the follicles to rupture. Spaying is pretty routine so as long as the vet has experience with this type of surgery her risks are low, I agree.

I hope she is doing well & let us know how she is doing.

Vet does 20-30 types/similar procedures a year. They have all sorts of awards on their walls. They specialise only in exotic pets.

Dear all,

Just to update you. Coco had surgery today. When I called, they said she was awake and walked around a little bit which was a good sign. Her beard was black but vet expected that.

They removed lots of follicles.

I will call again tomorrow and they will decide when she can come home

I haven't had this experience with any of mine but I've mostly read of good outcomes from other owners. I think you made a good choice with the options presented to you and I hope that Coco has a good recovery !

I agree, since she did have so many follicles then removing them was the right thing to do. They
normally recover very well from these types of surgeries. It sounds like Coco is doing well, overall.
Let us know when she is able to come home! We are all pulling for her!

Dear All,

Coco is home!

Vet is happy with her progress. I saw a photo of what they took out. Lots and lots of follicles. Mostly large but other tiny ones which would have grown.

She has a follow up appointment next Saturday.

Antibiotics via injection not required. Instead antibiotics and liver med to be given orally.

Her liver was pale in colour and Vet described it as fatty liver. Tests sent off to check if any issue with liver and if so, is it permanent or can be reversed. Results take a few weeks.

Coco has soft blankets down to ensure stitches don’t get pulled. Sending you a photo.

The liver has a unique ability to heal & regenerate so hopefully it will recover. Which liver
medication did the vet give her?
