My little boy had an accident a couple of days ago which led to the amputation of a front finger. Even though he is supervised when out of his tank, he tried to jump on the lounge table and unluckily a ps controller fell down on top of his finger causing a lot of damage 💔💔❤️‍🩹. Immediate trip to the vet who had to remove his partly sectioned finger.

We are at currently injecting him antibiotics and anti-inflammatories as prescribed by the vet, he is still active as usual however not eating much at the moment. Used to eat around 30-40 crickets per day and now he is not interested at all. I have tried with mealworms instead and he eats at least a few with some greens. I know mealworms are not ideal due to their high content in fat but is the only thing that he eats right now, I really hope he gets his appetite back as soon as, like I said he used to love crickets but after the operation he isn’t interested whatsoever.

I don’t know if anyone has gone through a similar episode or can give me some advice, all I want is for my beardie to recover as soon as possible.

Antibiotics can wreck their appetite, and if you add the stress from the vet on top it's compounded.
It make take him a little bit to settle back into his normal routine 🙂

Hello,

I agree with xp29, antibiotics oftentimes markedly decrease their appetites. Are you using any type
of probiotic to help out for his tummy?
Also, his finger may be hurting him some as well which will most likely affect his appetite. Has his
beard been dark in color or normal?
You can put some raw unpasteurized honey on the amputated finger area to help with healing, too.

Hello Tracie and xp29,

Thanks for your reply.

I haven’t noticed his beard darker than usual, he is actually behaving as usual except the appetite.

The vet also prescribed a topical cream to prevent the wound from getting infected.

I hope he gets back to normal soon.

Also, as he doesn’t bother eating crickets atm, could you recommend another type of insect that is suitable to feed him everyday nutritional wise

Dubai roaches, silkworms, and black soldier fly larvae. Superworms and hornworms can be used also but the first 3 are better.

Hello Alvaro,

That is good to hear his beard is normal color & not dark. The
antibiotic cream should help with the healing for his finger.
I hope his appetite starts to improve soon. Have you tried giving
him bee pollen to help with his appetite?

Hello Tracie,

I haven’t actually tried bee pollen, will get that asap, can see you can buy it in granules or powder, what’s the best option?

It’s been a month since I’ve joined bd.org! It feels like it’s been longer than that, but I’m glad I’m here and apart of this lovely community!
I can feel her staring into my soul demanding food
She was having a staring contest with a mealworm. I guess I never taught her to not play with her food, lol.
bro went to bed already, it’s 10:36 pm
Definitely going to be using this image if I ever catch a fence lizard again.
