Hey- so my beardie didn’t poop for a week until today, but was eating a bit more, and was not basking, even if I put her in her basking spot. (I think she’s going through a brumation like phase so that may be why?) so today I decided to give her a soak to see if she’d go, as she was blackening a little on her beard. She was closing her eyes while in the water, and then when she actually tried to go, she was straining a lot. She did go, but not a lot, definitely think she could go more. She was straining pretty hard after, like shaking her whole body was shaking straying to push and her cloaca? (I think that’s what it’s called) was bulging quite a bit. Now that she’s went a little, she’s lightened up a tinyyy bit. And she’s basking right now, so hopefully that helps her a little. She won’t drink any water, and she didn’t eat yesterday, although that’s not super abnormal for her. Do I need to take her to the vet asap or is this something I can monitor and help at home? I’m not sure how to best help her and make sure she’s safe.

Keep her hydrated and feed her some plain canned pumpkin that will make her poop- it is not uncommon for them not to poop for weeks on end - mine dont poop for like 3 weeks at a time - what are you feeding her for diet ?

Normally she gets salad everyday, and bugs roughly 2-3 times a week. For bugs she gets dubias, about 5-7 medium sized, and for salads she gets a 2-3 of either collards, turnip greens, mustard greens, kale(on occasion), and then bell peppers, cucumber, or carrots, mainly. She’s been eating only her bugs when offered these past few weeks, and sometimes her salads. Her protein has increased a bit, as I learned I was not giving her as much as she needed. I tried to gradually up it but maybe I did it too fast. Before it was 4-5 medium roaches about 1-2 times a week. She won’t drink for me, I’ll keep trying to get her to drink. And I’ll try the pumpkin and se if that helps, I wish I could attach a video but it won’t let me upload it. She was definitely having a hard time trying to go.

Record on YouTube post link- how is she getting water? Make sure insects are not too big for her- is she full grown?

She is full grown, insects are never any bigger than in between her eyes. I give her water with a syringe and drop it on her nose- sometimes she’ll drink from a water bowl but usually she won’t. Here’s a link to the video. Warning it’s slightly graphic/gross

Hello,

I wasn't able to see the video though. If the urates are a bit hard, you can give extra oral fluids
along with some sugar free applesauce mixed with canned pumpkin to help in case there is a bit
of trouble with impaction.

Thank you! I will try that. The urates weren’t hard, just seemed like she was having a really hard time going. She didn’t eat yesterday, so I’m gonna try and give her the pumpkin and applesauce today just to be safe.

Hello,

Let us know how things go. I'm glad that the urates weren't hard then, but extra oral fluids definitely
wont hurt at all. I hope she likes the pumpkin & applesauce, also!

Hey! Sorry for asking so late, but she’s still having some trouble going to the bathroom. Was wondering how much pumpkin and/or applesauce to give her? Like ml? Also, should I add olive oil? I’ve heard that can help as well?

You can give a half teaspoon or so [ applesauce only sugar free ! ] also could use other types of soft/shredded or cooked squash and a drop or 2 of olive oil. Try the warm shallow bath as well.

She won’t eat right now, she blackbearding a little, which she usually does when she has to poop. I’m terrified of a prolapse happening if I try to get her to poop, because she strained so hard last time. Should I take her to an emergency vet to be safe? The nearest vets are all over an hour away so I’m scared that if something did happen, I wouldn’t be able to get her to a vet soon enough.

Try syringe feeding her some of the unsweetened applesauce - or you can try plain canned pumpkin as well pureed w/ some honey in it - NO vets for pooping they will give an enema and you dont want that -

Okay. I will try that. I will try to give her a soak and see if that helps too, I’ve been scared to soak her because I don’t want her straining herself too hard if she can’t go.

Hey! I'm planning on ordering a 4x2x2 for my next beardie but I'm worried about lighting. I have a UVA and a UVB but they are small (the UVA just being a bulb and the UVB being 12 ish inches?) My house is drafty so I need a strong light that puts off quite a good amount of heat, any suggestions?
