So the culture came back negative for infection so he is going to go ahead & start treating for Gout now? That is great, hopefully it will start to work pretty quickly. It will take some time for the swelling to go down because the uric acid levels have to drop first, in order for the system to start clearing out the build up.
Allopurinol is the most commonly prescribed for gout. Hopefully his kidneys have not been damaged. Go ahead & continue with the extra oral fluids & just give 1ml of Black cherry juice, daily. OH ok, if he seems to like the powder better, then that is fine also! A little extra wont hurt him either.
That is wonderful he is eating & has shown some improvement in mood & appetite too since he ate some squash, greens & roaches, too.
So the vet gave us Allopurinol (Watermelon flavored!) yesterday and Hadron seems to like it. I really hope it works and he will get better. We have enough allopurinol for 30 days so hopefully it works in that amount of time, the vet also did a repeat fecal and wants to do a round of dewormings, once every 2 weeks to make sure he's not losing any nutrition. Is this okay to be doing at the same time? Should I give him a probiotic like Benebac after dewormings?
I will continue giving the black cherry juice or powder, he seems to eat both pretty readily. His appetite has improved so it is definitely a good sign but I'm still a bit reserved as to what his overall prognosis will be in about a month. But until then we can only hope for the best. Thank you so much for everything, I will continue to update you on his status and hopefully he'll be at least a bit better in a few weeks.
Watermelon flavored allopurinol, huh? LOL That is great he seems to like it. Do you know what his dose is, did they start him at 20mg/kg or a higher dose?
The allopurinol should start to work immediately, however, the swelling will take some time to recede. Plus, with gout, it is a health condition & he will need a lifetime of treatments, most likely to maintain his renal function. It is a condition that will need to be managed.
The Black cherry powder or juice helps, but, it isn't quite enough to keep the flareups at bay but coupled with the allopurinol it will be a great treatment. The maintenance dose of it is very low also making it very easy to continue thus reducing the price.
Yes, I would recommend giving a probiotic while giving the de-worming, absolutely. It would help him out. I hope that he does improve, but, be patient. Remember, reptiles get sick slowly & get well slowly. It will take him some time & it could take several months even to see marked improvement in the swelling also.
Do keep us updated on him, I wish him a speedy recovery! It is a great sign that his appetite has increased & he seems to be feeling better.
