I've lurked for quite awhile on this website reading every other post, honestly! I have a huge passion for reptiles and a love of Beardies. I had it all planned out. I was already going big on the home so might as well pick the best of the best, right?! I decided I wanted a deep red Crimson shipped from a reputable breeder as red is my favorite color! I told myself I would never chance a pet store one as I have read too many stories about health issues... Well today I was going around to pet stores looking for some specific accessories for my box turtle. And of course I had to stop and admire the Beardies! I first went to Petco and found some 'Pastels' to admire. Oh how I wanted to rescue them! Drowsy eyes, dead MEAL WORMS in the bowl and just skin and bones! They looked on the brink of death :( If only I had the resources to house all the Beardies in need! :(
My next trip was to a family owned pet store. Again, just had to admire the little Beardies! I saw a little lady inside looking up at me. I just had to get her out and hold her! You know how it is... ;) She had no special Morph and a tail nip but with one tilt of her little head she had me!
I'm 19 and currently live with my mom. She had finally said okay to a Beardie but with the agreement of waiting a month or so. I told her about my little find and continued to mention it. My mom agreed to go see her but we WOULD NOT get her. My mom does not like reptiles AT ALL!
We walk in, the lady hands her to me and with the tilt of her head my mom let's out an infatuated 'awww' :)
Emma is now sitting in our living room ;)
She's no high Morph and her tail isn't very long but her imperfections are perfect to me! So happy to have her apart of the family!
Funny how that worked out! My mom the reptile hater can't stop admiring her and informs me everytime Emma tilts that little head ;)
This is my perfect little girl!

Hello. And Hello to you too sweet Emma. (I've always liked that name  ) There are so many different color variations with BD's that your "normal colored" little girl seems unique! :D You're gonna have alot of fun watching Emma grow, shed, then become one shade lighter or darker. She's lovely, welcome to BD.org, my favorite place on the web

I was the same way not quite 30 years ago. Miss O and Miss Y got me hooked on beardies. We just welcomed our 7th beardie (only have had 2 at a time) on November 7th. She will be 7 months old on January 18th.

By the way, we would love to see pictures of Emma. It's kind-of a requirement on here to post picts of your beardie babies.

Cute little girl :)
But yea thats how we got our first dog.I was only 6 but i still remember that my mum told me and my brother " were only gonna look at the puppies. We wont buy one". An hour later we walked back to the car with a puppy in our arms :D

Even though she might look " only" like a " normal morph" right now she might change her colours.
Thats how Spikey looked like when we got her

Thanks everyone!
Spikey is beautiful! I'm excited to see how Emma's colors turn out!
Emma is doing great! She doesn't seem very stressed out. When we brought her home she climbed up on her new stick and basked! She's a very curious girl and has a big interest in our dogs who pass by her home. Today she ate 21 Crickets! 2 were dusted :) I'm very pleased as I expected a small appetite and stressed out little eyes. I do have quite a few questions though :) But first, some pictures from her bath today!

UMM LADY! Let me out of here!

And just one from last night. I love her spotted tummy!

So now I have a few questions!

First, her habitat!
I had been planning to get a Beardie for half a year but having her at home now was not planned. Last night I ran and got her lights. NOT Reptisun. They did not have the right length. So right now she’s under lights I don’t agree with after reading so much on the heat sources… I plan to return everything but she needs UVB and UVA for the time being… I’m about to order my Reptisun light, but I’m at a loss… She is in a 10 gallon tank. Her UVB and UVA are on one side of her tank for temperature control. She has a very nice 40-50 gallon home but obviously she is too small for it… I don’t know how to order my Reptisun. I don’t want her to be under the lights she is for much longer. But money is limited and buying 2 separate Reptisuns just doesn’t sound appealing. Especially, with the 10 gallon being temporary. Also, the tube lights would take the length of her tank and I fear that could complicate temperature control. What would your suggestions be? Should I move her to the 40 gallon and block half or more off. But wouldn’t that complicate temp. control with one side being blocked off? A little confused on that one! I just want to get her under lights I feel good about!

My other question is about her tail. I’ve seen tail nips to be pretty common so I might be paranoid… But doesn’t hurt to ask! I’ve read some posts about black tails. Her tail is dark grey on the tip and slightly shorter than the average. Should I be worried or on the look out for something?
Also, what is your Beardie’s favorite food and/or treat!?
Thanks again! More pictures and QUESTIONS TO COME

Thats great to hear that she ate today. Many Beardies dont show any appetite the first few days theyre in a new enviroment. But your girl seems to be a brave one who finds it more exciting than scary :)

As for the lights : I ordered my repti sun tube on amazon. It arrived only 5 days or so later. Was really happy about that.
Yea I do understand you.The suns arent the cheapest ones amyways so to buy 2 seems a waste. Id put her in the bigger tank and see if she finds it too overwhelming or not.You can always divide it in half like you already said, and then you can just keep an eyebon the temps and you should be fine. Spikeys is still in her 20 g tank(currently waiting for her to get rid of the parasites.then shes gonna move to her new big enclosure) and were using a 100 w basking light and a inthink its either 18 or 24" repti sun tube. The uvb light doesnt produce any heat(it only gets a little warm.) so i wouldnt worry that the uvb increases the temps. Like I said were using a 100 w as heat lamp and the temps are perfect but it also depends on how warm your house is etc. Oh and what kind of thermometer are you using? I suggest you get a digital one with probe or a temp gun incase you have those stick ons. They are n

I'm worried about the big tank because although she is very calm and inquisitive, her favorite spot is at the top of her stick. She has been on it for 2 nights now and didn't move much today! She has barely explored. Although, her Basking Temp. fluctuates. from high 80's to high 90's. I was told to get 50 watt of each because her tank is only 10 gallons... I'm afraid to go higher but I don't want it to be too low temp. wise. But because she hasn't explored, I don't want to completely overwhelm her in an even bigger house, ya know? What would you suggest for a Basking light? She does have a digital thermometer with probe :) I have the probe taped near where she basks at the top of the stick! :)

Yea I do understand it.The suns arent the cheapest ones anyways so to buy 2 seems a waste. Id put her in the bigger tank and see if she finds it too overwhelming or not.You can always block a part of like you already said, and then you can just keep an eye on the temps and you should be fine. Spikeys is still in her 20 g tank(currently waiting for her to get rid of the parasites.then shes gonna move to her new big enclosure) and were using a 100 w basking light and a i think its either 18 or 24" repti sun tube. The uvb light doesnt produce any heat(it only gets a little warm.) so i wouldnt worry that the uvb increases the temps. I suggest you get a digital one with probe or a temp gun incase you have those stick ons. They are not accurate at all + ones you stick them one the glass you cant get rid of them anymore( i made that mistakes :x).

As for the tail :
Do you got a picture of it? But Im gonna leave that question for a more experienced person :p

A really good site is this here
http://www.beautifuldragons.com/Nutrition.html
You can find all the dos and donts there :)
Spikey loves her Dandelion & squash as her staple veggis. She now discovered that Raspberries are AWESOME tasting too :D haha but thats more a treat. She also loves all kinds of worms as treats like butter- and waxworms.
A lot of people use dubia roaches as staple and Beardies seem to prefer them over crickets. + they dont stink and cant jump :p

Oh and these spots on her belly are actually stress marks. But when I first got Spikey i though they were just part of her pattern until i shortly after found out they were stress marks :D haha. But dont worry she might just have them cause shes still a little excited about everything. Just make sure her temps are fine and they should go away soon. But dont worry there will always be situation/ days when they come back. Its nothing harmfull ;)

EDIT :
Just read your new post :
The basking temp can actually be a little higher.Babies like warm between 102-112 . But of course it depends on each beardie :) Just make sure shes always well hydrated ;)

If the temps are that low, I would either go for a 75 or 100. I started fafnir right off the bat with a 40 gal tank. His favorite foods are dubia, phoenix worms, and the very occasional waxworm. He also likes squash (now), bok choy(chinese cabbage), and collard greens.

Hey! I'm planning on ordering a 4x2x2 for my next beardie but I'm worried about lighting. I have a UVA and a UVB but they are small (the UVA just being a bulb and the UVB being 12 ish inches?) My house is drafty so I need a strong light that puts off quite a good amount of heat, any suggestions?
