Hello,

I agree, a lot of vets still prescribe sulfa based drugs for Coccidia. As Sue had mentioned, it doesn't really
kill it but rather keeps it in check per say. The Ponazuril or Toltrazuril will literally wipe it out. If he is doing
well, eating & basking, he most likely doesn't need any meds. If his stool continues to improve, you could probably wait & let his immune system kick it out.
You can give it a few weeks to a month or so if you want to get another fecal done.
Let us know how he is doing.

The first organism is characteristic of coccidia and is prob what the vet prescribed antibiotics for. You know coccidia is transmitted mainly thru the fecal/oral route, so be scrupulous in cleaning his poop and keeping his cage clean. @AHBD or @Drache613 can tell you more about antibiotic necessity...my initial thinking would be yes since a moderate amount of the parasite is present but I am not the expert on bearded dragons. The other two organisms state "rare" in number and Im willing to guess most healthy beardies have some level of parasites within them (as do we, if anyone ever tested us for parasites). Healthy bodies coexist with parasites and can keep their numbers down, as to the coccidia, AHBD and Tracie can tell you more. What antibiotic was prescribed?

Ty ! Yes, exactly ! I do think he had them since we got him in november, but that they increased maybe bc of stress maybe ? bc I do clean his poop as soon as he ****s them (feel like my wording is not the prettiest here, pardon my french), and deep clean his enclosure weekly... I will go get them tonight and tell you what they are !

His only symptom was diarreah, appetite was 10/10 , no lethargy, I was careful no to let him be dehydrated, no black bearding, and I checked his temps to be sure he was ok

Hi there, the vet probably prescribed either Albon [ a harsh med. so be careful of how many days are recommended ] or else Ponazuril /totltrazuril which some say can beat coccidia in 2-3 days. When you find out what it is post here so Tracie can critique it for you. Hydration is very important during any treatment. Best wishes to the good Dr. for a speedy and uneventful treatment .

Interesting...SMZ-TMP is generally bacteriostatic, not bactericidal. This means it prevents bacteria from growing and multiplying but does not kill the bacteria. Coccidia is not a bacteria, per se, but a protozoan. Im sure your vet has his reasons, as SMZ-TMP is commonly prescribed for coccidiosis. However, the coccidia CAN (not necessariy will) develop a resistance to it. Ponazuril like AHBD mentioned is more of a first line drug. From the Vetlexicon: Isospora amphiboluri (which is the type Dr Wilson has) is the most common species seen in clinical practice, particularly in the inland bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps) and is usually non-pathogenic. Which would explain why he is not showing signs of illness, and maybe why the vet is going with that. That said, I am NOT a vet or a vet tech or anything like that. @Drache613 could tell you much more about everything than I can.

Stress cause elevated counts also.
Coccidia can be a p.i.t.a. to get rid of. A @Sue E. mentioned it's life cycle requires it to be pooped out and taken back in orally. It's imperative to keep poop cleaned up and decor sanitized while trying to clear it up. (And to prevent outbreaks in the 1st place) They carry a small load naturally but their immune system normally keeps it in check.

Ok thank you so much for the info, I feel more informed before deciding the best course of treatment. Wilson’s poop was runny but better on monday, perfect yesterday and today too. I just grabbed the antibiotics today, and I do wonder if the numbers could decrease naturally considering what you are all telling me.

Ok great I understand, So his immune system may have been affected by stress (we relocated him in a diff room about 10 days ago, diarrhea started 2 days later) so it may « rebalance » itself, + considering his poops are pretty mich back to normal since monday
