Strange behavior out of my girl the last few days. She's about 14 months old. 17 inches, and 580g. She has proper heating and lighting and substrate, in a 40 breeder. UVB will be 6 months at the end of the month, almost ready to change. She eats mostly greens and supers at the moment.
Anyway, she's really cut down on her food intake this week. She's pooping very small amounts every day...mostly urates. Normally, she goes once a week. She paces her tank like mad every morning. And then she will get up and do it again throughout the day. She wants out. I let her out. Normally she just chills. But she's scouring the house. Like she's looking for something. This morning, she's following me around like a puppy. Very weird for the dragon who normally just sits on the couch. I've given her a tub of Eco earth to see if she wants to dig...nope. I've checked her belly for eggs...I don't feel any. I'm at a loss. My totally chill, eating machine seems to have gone to the other extreme ???
Well, I am not sure, but it could be a pre-lude to eggs.
My Emmalee is 4 years old, never produced eggs. Until just yesterday when she let go of 17.
I was shocked, she was not overly fat, and in fact had only really gained 10 grams over her top weight. I could not feel any eggs at all, and she did not look fat what so ever. I had a dig box for her cause suddenly she became very active, just like yours, and normally she is a very lazy girl who barely moves.I put her in her box, but all she did was try to get out. She dug in it once for a couple hours, but left noting behind. After that every time I put her on the floor to run around she would dig the floor, but never in the box (and it's a hard wood floor). She also went from pooping once every 1-2 weeks to daily for the last week to include mostly left over water and urate. Her eating habits never changed (baffling), but I hear it is normal for a dragon with eggs to go off food. Anyway, this went on for about 2 weeks before she laid eggs, not in a dog box, but on her basking platform at 9:30 in the evening.
Sounds like suspicious egg activity to me. Cause our stories about behavior are parallel.
You will find more detail of my dragon story in a recent post What? Eggs!!! No Way, as the this literally just happened to me, sound to eerily similar.
Wow. I'm going to get some more substrate to put in her lay box tonight. What can I grab quickly from Freddies (if anything), that is not as expensive as coco fiber? Can't get to the harware store tonight for play sand.
Ok. I've got her lay box all ready for action. I dug a little hole to get her started. At this point I think she thinks I'm nuts. So I'll just keep trying. How long should I give her before I rule out eggs? A couple weeks?
Is it normal that I can't feel eggs yet? Again, she pooped in her tank this morning....even smaller than yesterday. Mostly urate. She ate nothing today. But she's a big girl, so I'm not too concerned about that
I put her in the lay box today, but she just sat there.
She still basks normally, she's still alert and active.
And I'm still really nervous.
I never, ever felt eggs in Emmalee's tummy. I had no idea she had any, I could not feel anything, and she was not overly fat.
Also although I provided her with a dig box, she did not use it at all, and then proceeded to lay eggs or her basking platform and tile.
Her behavior lasted about 2-3 weeks before she laid eggs, even though I was not expecting that! And now I see more strange behavior we are trying figure out.
Good Luck and keep an eye on her, but so far you are doing everything right.
