Overheated Beardie

I was not careful, and my beardie is recovering, I hope.

In August of 2014, I adopted Jayden from a bearded dragon and reptile rescue. The people who turned him in to them said he was right at 3 years old. I put him in the same viv as the beardie I had before him, with the same thermostat, a Zoo Med that always kept the viv temperatures right where they needed to be, so much so that I rarely checked the temps any more, and when I did, they were always right on.

For several days Jayden has been black bearding and hiding in the far corner of the viv. He is not a young beardie, and I thought maybe his age was catching up with him. I checked the temps. It was 122 F at the basking spot, and 98 in the coolest corner of the viv. I grabbed the thermostat and tried to turn it down, but it was no longer working. It was dead with the heat in the on position. I made an emergency run into town and got a new thermostat. It's also a Zoo Med. It seems to be working just fine so far, and the black is leaving Jayden's beard and chest. He's looking around a bit and seems kind of interested in life again, but he's still sort of blah. The new thermostat has only been in there about half an hour.

Electronics eventually fail. I was complacent. I hope my failure didn't harm him. I'm feeling pretty guilty.

I'd take him out and let him cool to room temperature. 98 degrees for a little while shouldn't hurt him.

Well, Jayden had a snuggle and made happy beardie noises. He's had the new thermostat for 5 hours. He's basking right now, and had a good appetite for his crickets. He still has stress marks, but they're not as dark as they were. It looks like he's getting back to normal after giving me a good scare. :) :) :)

Hello,

Oh dear, that does happen, poor little one.
He should be just fine, but it may take a day or two for him to get back to normal. It sounds like he's doing better already.

Let us know how things are going.

a poem by AHBD (THANK YOU SO MUCH! I LOVE IT!)

Sir Henry the dragon
Looking for his dragon girl
Ventures out in to the wide world
His hopes are up but as you can see
There is no dragon girl for Sir Henry
A light bulb goes off and he takes mom aside
Could you perchance get me a mail order bride ?
