I'd just like to share with everybody that one year ago "today" (September 19, 2010) I got my mali uromastyx Stan. I bought him from a pet store that was severely mistreating him, and though he doesn't really have a spiny tail anymore, he's lived a happy and healthy year
Here's a recent photo:
And taken this morning:
Thank you all for indulging me, I'm sure not everybody does this just for a first year I hope you enjoyed the photos.
Wow look at his tail. Is he an Egyptian Uro? Or? lol I am still learning these guys and to me they all look the same. Im pretty sure mine is Saharan though. Grats on the 1 year, great job on him he looks happy. He is a good looking Uro.
I had a Uro not too long ago and unfortunately had to give him to someone who could handle him better than I could....he was the meanest Uro I had ever seen and even drew blood on me with his tail a few times. Got to the point where I had to where those big thick leather gloves I used for the fireplace just to pick him up. But I know he is happy and healthy where he is and I am glad you gave your Uro a good home Good luck
Wow, that's really odd. I can't imagine a uro being aggressive at all, mine's always been so timid. Good to hear he's happy and healthy though, regardless.
I'm curious, do they whip with their tails? They seem so stubby compared to other lizards, so I'm surprised to hear they can attack with them at all. I always imagined they were just used as shields.
Yes, the tails are one of the strongest parts of their body and how they defend themselves in the wild. It could be possible that yours was a wild caught uro, which is still semi-common in the states. That could explain the extra aggressiveness that yours displayed.

Might this be the issue with mine then? He runs like mad when I touch him, squirms to no end when I hold him. LOL the only time I got him to hold still was when he was drinking water from a syringe? :? My Uro is weird!
sounds like mine was....he got so big that i when I had to pick him up to clean out his tank, I put on the big fireplace gloves and a hoodie to cover my arms to protect them....he was so strong I could barely handle him anymore

Mine still does this and I've had him for quite some time now, and I'm positive hes not from the wild. If yours was extremely aggressive that could be a sign he was wild caught but the squirming is pretty common from what I've seen with other peoples uros.
Calcifer still prefers to run away from my hand and hide as apposed to being held.
