Nova has become very sick

Evening update about Nova.
So he's basking and black bearding. But when I had him out and he cooled off, the black beard faded. Does he not want to be warm? My temperature gun shows he gets to the low to mid 90's F.

Forgot to mention that I'm going to turn off the heat light and see if the black beard goes away when he's cooled down. If that happens, what does that mean?
IR guns can be off -- do you have a digital probe thermometer?

Another little piece of advice.
I see a beam made of wood, very similar to pine wood.
If so, then you need to either replace it with deciduous wood, or apply a special coating (for example, a two-component polyurethane varnish)
Coniferous trees have a negative effect on the respiratory system of dragons because the resin of these trees contains turpentine.
As far as I remember, @xp29 has encountered this problem in practice.

I have indeed. One of my males developed twitching. The vet had no idea why. I had no luck researching it either. Then I was looking at something off topic and came across a page that talked about how evergreens are toxic to reptiles and to dogs. After removing the log hides from my setups the twitching nearly completely stopped. It wasn't immediate but I didn't change anything else. I just don't use it now.

How unusual. Thats been in there since I first had him, does it take that long to start having noticeable negative effects?
I actually did have a lot of trouble finding platforms and basking log for him. And recently when I looked online again there where none that where high enough.
A single piece hide and basking platform would be nice, but I have not seen any that look good.

It's possible that your wooden beam has long since dried out and there is no resin left in it. But I wanted to warn you just in case the wood still smells of resin.

Hello,

That has been known to happen, & has been mentioned here on the boards in the past. Perhaps the
wood wasn't properly sealed up well enough. Pine has been known to be toxic. I know that it can be
used but it has to be properly sealed & dry enough to off gas, etc & cure properly.
I am happy to hear that the twitching has gone away now!

Ah, I see. Yeah its strange though, that wood is ten years old! I'm looking at those resin reptile platforms now though, not sure what to get and how big.

It's hard to find decor for larger reptiles. The commercial market cater to small reptiles.
As far as I know pretty much any hardwood with the exception of walnut is safe to use. I think most of us end up building our own stuff after they out grow the smaller decor.

Hey! I'm planning on ordering a 4x2x2 for my next beardie but I'm worried about lighting. I have a UVA and a UVB but they are small (the UVA just being a bulb and the UVB being 12 ish inches?) My house is drafty so I need a strong light that puts off quite a good amount of heat, any suggestions?
cookie event at my library today, quite fun! Made some bracelets for my comrades too, to give them at church in the morning. Got a busy day tomorrow even though I’m off work… i go back on tuesday so atleast I’ll have 2 days off to rewind….then back to hell lol
