Hello. I’m fairly new to bearded dragons and reptiles in general, but I think I’ve been handling it well. I built a custom tank for my bearded dragon that I got at about 3 months old. That tank had an open top, but I was able to maintain temperature and humidity well. Three weeks ago, I purchased a larger tank for him and since moving into the new tank, he has been stressed, glass surfing and trying to get out in 20 minute or so instances continuously throughout the day.
The new tank is a 40 gallon Thrive glass tank. It has a closed top this time. The temperature and humidity levels are correct, better so than the open top tank. My beardie has access to food and water throughout the day, food being greens daily, juvenile bearded dragon diet two days a week, and bsfl as his core insect. About every two weeks, I supply him with crickets, dubias, or both and they last about a week.
He has a linear uvb bulb, and it was purchased and set up for him around the first of the year.
He never acted like this in his old cage. He glass surfed occasionally, but that was near the beginning and I think he was just getting used to everything during that time. But ever since he entered the new cage, he has been adamant on getting out. When I allow him to roam, he will go to the window to look outside a little while, but not too long after, he begins running around like crazy and scratching at things like the door, the bath tub, etc. I have tapestries and he has tried to climb those as well. He never acts aggressive, never turns dark colors or turns his beard black, he just acts crazy.
I don’t understand why he is acting the way he is, I’m lost because I feel like I’m doing everything right but clearly something is wrong.
If anybody has any ideas, please shout it out!
Thanks.

He isn’t big enough to eat the adult bearded dragon pellet food yet, so I give him juvenile pellet food, as I couldn’t find a medium sized type.
Okay, As far as I have heard, the pellet foods are not good for dragons. Just stick with vegetables and insects. I’m going to tag a couple people that hopefully can advise you because I am new to all this and I don’t know very much. @KarrieRee @AHBD

he will go thru relocation stress - did you put the UVB in side the tank ? What are you using for a UVB? fresh salads and insects are best - pellet food is really dehydrating - hes going to get moisture from his salads so please rinse the greens before serving

The uvb bulb is inside the tank. It’s a reptisun 10.0 24” linear uvb bulb. Thank you guys for replying so quickly. How long does relocation stress typically last? (To ease my mind, if that’s what is indeed wrong.)

It depends on the dragon-- did you move all his decor w/ him? Make sure his basking temps are up to par- and his uvb is directly above the basking decor 12-15 inches

He was moved with all of his decor. They temps are good and the uvb is as well. That’s why I’m so lost, unfortunately.
It could be his hormones kicking in - they tend to get real restless w/ the weather changing here soon plus the fact that hes in a new tank - give him time to adjust - as long as hes eating even a little basking pooping and active he will be fine

Okay. I read one article that was talking about leaving brumation and having extreme hormones, especially male bearded dragons. I think it was bad timing on my part to upgrade his tank…
He is eating less than in the old tank, but still eating enough I suppose. Thanks to everyone for the replies; my only other question I guess would be how long does the typical “weather changing reactions” last? I assume just till the weather isn’t so back and forth everyday?

Its hard to say- my one male goes thru the glass routine every Jan- Feb glass surfing wanting out he drives me crazy - does it for around a month or so - he finally settles down but during that months time he drives me nuts -- I will get him out for 2 hrs or so - on the days I can as I work from home and sometimes I just cant get him out - he will be fine just let him adjust to his tank - you might want to get him out for awhile and see if that calms him down
