He guys... so my sister and her husband are giving us their beardie in December. We are pretty excited. His name is Thor. He is about 5 or 6 years old. They sent me some photos and Thor doesnt look very... Healthy. He moves really well... but he looks rather thin. They are feeding him lettuce and hardly any bugs. Understanding that he will eat mostly greens because of his age, they have been putting apple juice on his greens, which bothers me. He looks pretty thin and that bothers me also. He is a little sluggish and isnt very sociable and we will be working on that when we get him. We already have Marvin and know that neither one of them can be housed in the same set up. I am trying to get advice on how to healthily plump up our new dragon and how long we should keep him quarantined before we let him roam the home. Also, what could we expect his behavior to be like moving to a new location.
Green leaf lettuce is okay for beardies but not iceberg. They need a variety of greens, veggies and occasionally fruits. Bugs are a must! The apple juice thing, never heard of that before. I'm not experienced enough to give advise on how to fatten him up but, I know others can help you there.
Just give him good food, love and time to acclimate. Good luck.
Got any pictures?
Leaf lettuce isn't the best greens to feed. Collards or dandilions are much better. A 6 year old dragon does not need much insects in the diet, about 20% is enough. I use to totally wean my adults off bugs entirely. I don't have any bearded dragons now, just Rankins and they are not old enough to wean off insects yet...but will be soon.
